You don't develop toughness. Carter is soft. Watch when he tackles. Ball carriers don't go backwards, they always fall forward. Only time I saw otherwise was that hit against that tiny falcon running back. Carter doesn't try to knock ball carriers out. Lee doesn't either but his instincts make up for it.

At least that's the case this year. Last year though...

I want to see what Bruce does next year. What I know now is he was really good one year and really bad the next. I need to see which of the two is more indicative of the kind of player he really is. That'll come next year.

I'm more under the impression that we should try to get something in return for him since he's only got one year left and he still may fetch something reasonable in return.

Otherwise, he plays out his contract here and either steps his game up to a level we can't resign him. Or he doesn't and do we even really want him back? We'd probably just let him walk because of re-signing needs with Smith, Dez, etc.

All you have to do is draft a Penn State LB....

Navarro Bowman
Sean Lee
Paul Posluzny
LaVarr Arrington
Tamba Hali
Cameron Wake

Yep, only other time. He's laid good hits on defenseless rbs though but anybody can do that.

Point I was trying to make is that he was physical at times last year. Overall extremely impressive in that ATL game. But something happened this year.

Anyway, I'm kind of done with him too. I think we could get more in return via trade and concentrate it up front on the dl.

I'm curious about the boards take on these two players b/c I heard a lot of comparisons before this season. One has shown minimal effort several times this year, the other plays with a ferocity of a thousand lions. My question is, do you think Bowman is Bowman even if he is drafted by the Cowboys and a part of this organization? Likewise, do you think Carter is Carter under a Harbaugh led Niners team? Is the player the problem or is it the culture?

I had Bowman ranked above Lee in that draft.

Carter had a good game last week.

Carter is not the first guy from UNC with questionable work ethic.

When Sean Lee was drafted a few years ago, someone posted a video of the play of the Penn St linebackers. Even though Sean Lee was making some plays, I notice number 11 making more plays. Just saying..

There's no denying that the franchise environment is detrimental to the team. It's a 3 ring circus of distractions, the players achieve star status just by being here, the power structure within the organization is blurred, the head coach isnt really in charge, . It's impossible to focus and several ex players have said as much.

Put carter in that defense and he automatically improves.... That defense doesn't have 6+ UDFA starters.... Its a dream team

i think eberflus is a good coach, i'm just wondering if there is something with the culture that attracts players with questionable effort here. bruce carter is a mystery to me. i wish there was a way to see how he would be playing on a team like the niners. cowboys desperately need a new coach who can bring philosophical change to this organization.

Eberflus is a good coach but Kenny Norton is better. Norton's players will run thru walls for him. That is the kind of coach that Carter needs. Carter needs a coach who will motivate him because self motivation is not working for him this season.

I have not read any of the replies- so take that into consideration.

I think this a terrific, thought-provoking thread.

Carter has real talent and athleticism. What holds him back?
Himself? That's what good coaching is for- to make you better than you yourself can make you.
To drive out the laziness, the doubts, to give the player the ability to excel- which should be easier for him than say... Alex Albright.

It's time to re-evaluate our talent development. Again.

Sad, but Carter is a perfect example of having a perfect piece of clay and the team not being able to mold him into what they want.

Man- I hope he molds by next season... I have a kiln...
