I like Benkert as a late rounder, but Linehan has a lot of the same tools.

21. MATT LINEHAN | Idaho 6027 | 230 lbs. | SR. Orchard Lake, Mich. (St. Mary’s) 11/13/1994 (age 23.5) #10 YEAR (GP/GS) CP-ATT CP% YDS TD INT CAR YDS AVG TD 2014: (11/10) 221-378 58.5 2,540 11 18 84 -57 -0.7 1 2015: (11/11) 248-391 63.4 2,989 16 11 91 234 2.6 5 2016: (13/13) 257-415 61.9 3,184 19 10 88 167 1.9 4 2017: (9/9) 173-281 61.6 2,056 16 4 73 -22 -0.3 2 Total: (44/43) 899-1,471 61.1 10,769 62 43 336 322 1.0 12 HT WT ARM HAND WING 40-YD 20-YD 10-YD VJ BJ SS 3C BP COMBINE N/A (not invited) PRO DAY 6027 230 32 1/2 10 78 4.92 2.86 1.81 28 09’00” 4.46 7.26 - SUMMARY: A two-star quarterback recruit out of high school, Matthew “Matt” Linehan, who is the son of Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, was a standout football and basketball player at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. With his father and uncles starring at Idaho, he followed in the family’s footsteps and became the Vandals’ starter as a true freshman. Linehan set career-bests as a junior and led Idaho to a 9-4 season, including a bowl win. He started the first nine games as a senior before suffering a season-ending arm injury. Linehan isn’t shy firing the ball into tight windows and adds extra juice when he uses hip torque. He feels the rush and has the feet to climb, but tends to struggle navigating while keeping his eyes elevated. He also tends to predetermine throws, staring lasers through his intended target. Overall, Linehan is a tough guy and managed to do positive things with a subpar supporting cast, but needs to impress in camp to earn a practice squad spot. GRADE: Priority Free Agent

I read a couple years ago where Scott Linehan worked with Tony Romo in the offseason. Makes you wonder how long the Cowboys have had their eyes on him.

Putting aside all the Scrappy Doo comments, he actually looks like a good Practice Squad guy. Good intangibles and physical tools, he just needs more reps and coaching. Irregardless of Dad being the OC, a year of following Dak around with a clipboard could turn this kid into a viable backup QB and that has value.

I agree; but I also think the Cowboys could have their long term backup in Cooper Rush. If Linehan and Rush have pretty much the same skill set; let's keep working with Rush, who lit up the preseason last year.

Of course, if the Cowboys hit on both Rush and Linehan, there's trade value there. Getting a late round pick for an undrafted project is a good deal.

Exactly. Pretty athletic and good arm. No reason other than the last name not to bring him in for a look. And specifically, the kid's best chance might be in his Dad's offense.

Big time, if you turn two UDFAs into viable backups and can trade the lesser of the two for a 4th or 5th round pick its a big win.
