Why is Newy Scruggs wearing a Cowboys hat? Because he was talking to Chris Miller and Doc Walker at Comcast Sports Net Mid-Atlantic about the Dallas Cowboys.

Scruggs was the guest on Wednesday's edition of Countdown to Training Camp, when Miller asked if the Cowboys' revered offensive line could end up as the second coming of The Hogs -- the offensive line of the Washington Commanders known for their ability to control the line of scrimmage in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Scruggs stood up for the Cowboys (see video above) – "We've already had a great wall in Dallas that won three Super Bowls, OK?" Scruggs said with a tone that was a mix of annoyed and incredulous. "Why can't they be that next version? Let's not compare them to something that's over in Washington."

At the end of their post on the topic, CSN Mid-Atlantic instructed Commanders fans who wanted to stick up for The Hogs to tweet @NewyScruggs and he heard a handful of smack talk on his post.

We like the fun @KrisGutierrez had with Newy before his live talkback.

We're ready for football, how about you?

Sounds like the perfect time to stand up and walk out.

I think better question concerning the cowboys Oline is did they jump the shark after last year(when something successful begins to go downhill)? Leary and Free(I know his limitations) leaving to be replaced by our injured guard from last year(Collins) and our swing tackle(Green)/reclamation first rounder(Cooper). So have we jumped?

Whoever we plug in at RT and LG will benefit greatly from having Tyron, Travis, and Zach beside them. Those three are the foundation and that is one strong foundation to build on.

La'el should ultimately be an improvement over Free. And we're going to find out how good Leary (and I'm a big Leary fan) actually was when we see how his replacement looks playing between Trav and Tyron.

Unless something unforeseen happens we should be as good if not better, overall, on the O line.

Speaking of, what sort of comp pick does Leary leaving have a possibility of being?

Collins is more talented than Leary or Free and I'm a fan of Leary.

They have options for the 5th OL. Green is talented and played really well in 2 starts at LT last season.

Cooper was very talented coming out of college. Injuries have been his problem.

Cleary and Bell are likely better than the 2016 version of Doug Free.

In all likelyhood they'll be as good or better.

Having said that, they'll never be as good as they were for 7 games on 2014...

I have that wait and see attitude this year for the Oline, there was a reason Free was playing last year. I thought he struggled and in my mind they had no one to throw in that position that could outplay him. Green needs to step up. Cooper I think the odds are against him, that injury must of been significant for he was a beast coming out of college and by all accounts he is a shell of his former self.

The Pigs were never as good as the Dallas O line of the 90's and frankly I do not see them as good as the current Boys O line. A poor third.

Favre would've gotten killed just like Romo. And he was older and not lasted as long.

I'm anticipating this year's version of the Dallas OL will be a work in progress, although I think it should prove to be at least the equal of what it was in 2016. By year's end it shoud be even better.

If either Cooper, Green or both of them become steady performers at LG, it would seem most likely that the overall OL should improve at least, incrementally, over what they were last year.

Like most of us, I expect La'el to perform more solidly than what Free did for the last several years and perhaps ever than he ever did, for that matter. OL depth, in and of itself, should be much better than it has been in a very long time and then some.

It really just comes down to 1 player because at worst case they could put La'el at LG which is break even or better as compared to Leary.

That would leave Green/Bell/Cleary competing at RT.

Garrett would not bench Free under any condition. Free starting last season is not an indicator of the backup's ability or lack thereof, IMO. When Green started 2 games at LT, he was as good as Free at his peak. Green has more talent than Free ever had, but was a 3rd round pick because of injury issues.

Cooper is good enough if healthy but that is big question mark. I base that on studying his 3 starts in Cleveland.

Basically if either Chaz Green or Cooper stay healthy, then they are likely as good or better than 2016. If not they could put La'el back at LG and give the RT help like they often did with Free.

Christ, it only takes 3 perenial Pro Bowlers to have what is stamped in the NFL, as top shelf linemen. What the hell is the problem? Really...

I think having Frederick, Smith, and Martin will elevate the play of RT and LG.
They will create a must do mentality.
You see it all the time where the culture/mentality on a team helps elevate players who in other situations wouldn't perform as well. Players try harder not to be the weak link.

And with a young QB and RB, they will take pride in keeping jerseys clean.

One thing that often gets overlooked is that the blocking scheme Dallas uses is simply very good. If everyone just handles their assignments, the line will be good. Throw in Smith, Frederick, and Martin and it gets very good, very fast.

Like other's have said, Collins at RT is a pretty big upgrade from Free... particularly the 2016 Free.

That really only leaves LG, which is IMO, the least important of the OL positions. I'm pretty confident that one of Green, Bell, Cooper, or Looney will step up and be plenty good there.

Even if they play Collins at LG (I think he'd be at least as good as Leary), I think it's likely that Bell or Green would play at least as good as Free did last year... and likely better, IMO.

So, you take a very good scheme, put in three all-pros at key positions, throw in another potential all-pro, and then put in a guy who is capable of replacing the talent Free took with him... and you should be left with a very good OL.

So, if you ask me, I don't think there will be any fall off from last year and the possibility of it being better is very real. I'm actually expecting that to be the case.

Nice explanation the scheme is the 12th man on offense.
