The Cowboys lock up one piece of their plans for the 2017 defensive line.
It was inevitable, now it is reality. According to Todd Archer, the Dallas Cowboys tendered an offer to exclusive rights free agent David Irving for the 2017 season, ensuring the defensive lineman will be on the roster. Irving will get $615,000 this upcoming year and the Cowboys remove the possibility of him becoming a free agent.
Irving is a key piece of the Cowboys defensive line, a player with enormous potential and who had a few outstanding games in 2016. He wrecked the Green Bay Packers during the regular-season matchup, and destroyed the Tampa Bay Bucs in the fourth quarter of that game. What the Cowboys are hoping for is consistency from Irving.
As the season progressed, Irving saw more playing time. His stats for the year were four sacks and four forced fumbles with one recovery. He also batted down five passes and had plenty of quarterback pressures.
The Cowboys expect a lot from Irving going forward.
“I think his ceiling is high,” executive vice president Stephen Jones said. “A lot is going to depend on him, how he wants to continue to work at it, which I think he does, continue to improve and get better, then I think he should only get better. But there’s a lot of work involved in that and certainly it didn’t just come overnight for him. He didn’t walk in this league and start having success. But I do think if he’ll continue on the path that he’s on then we think he should continue to improve.”
