Potential this....upside that......chiseled body this.......Tony Mandarich that......woops, did I say that?
Probably about the worst comparison ever made.
I have watched a lot of video on Smith and he is similar in run blocking to Free.....rarely devastates anyone but usually walls his guy off. In pass blocking he is effective and you can see he has the tools. He is only 20 and is likely to get much better. I'd have no problem with us taking him. Maybe trading down 4-5 spots to get him would be better off, but we can't play around too much if he is the guy we want.
As for other comments in this thread....someone posted that Carimi is possibly the best of the group. I have not seen ANY of the draft experts that have said Carimi is the best. That doesn't mean he won't be a very good pro...I think he will. He is kind of a bit like Iupati was last year. People said he was a guard only and tried to downgrade him......but I am sure San Fran would make the pick again. Whether he is only a guard or only a RT, if he can lock down the spot for the next 10 years I really don't care.
I have seen a lot of video of Castonzo and Solder looking absolutely horrible. I think my three favorite OL would be Smith, Carimi and Sherrod. Smith probably goes in the 9-15 range, Carimi in the 15-25 range and Sherrod late first or early second. So there is a lot of trade down opportunity.
The one thing posted in the draft opinions that I agree with is that there are good DE's that are likely to be available at the top of the second, not so much as far as starting OT's go. If you are sold completely on San Young then maybe you feel you can hold off a bit, but it is a risky proposition.
