Here are six guys that play defense that the Dallas Cowboys met with in Mobile, Alabama.
There is no doubt that the Senior Bowl has become a very worthy tool in determining draft picks for the Dallas Cowboys. It is a chance for us to look at players that we’re going to be discussing over the next several months. Dallas has had success out of their Senior Bowl scouting sessions. After all, both their All-Pro starting right guard Zack Martin and Pro Bowl rookie quarterback Dak Prescott were once Senior Bowl standouts. Think about it this way, this game was the last chance to get a look at some guys actually playing football.
Through various resources we’ve been able to confirm six defensive prospects that the Dallas Cowboys have met with. We decided to put all those together in one post for you to get a clear idea of these early discussions and what these players bring to the table.
DT Jaleel Johnson, Iowa, 6’3, 305 lbs (11th DT overall CBS)
DraftBlaster.com: “A productive one-gap interior defensive lineman that can get into the backfield. Plays a lot of snaps, and has a non-stop motor. Has limitations as a run defender, and will need to work on building up strength in his base and upper body to contribute more as a run defender. Perfect fit for an attacking 4-3 scheme.”
Projection: 3rd or 4th round
OLB Carroll Phillips, Illinois, 6’3, 237 lbs (12th OLB overall CBS)
BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1: ”Phillips is a sleeper prospect who some NFL teams love and others are lukewarm on. The teams that love Phillips say he is super athletic and twitchy. They feel that his speed and athleticism is very similar to Leonard Floyd. Like Floyd at Georgia, Phillips can struggle some on run downs; however, they feel that he is a gifted, natural pass-rushing talent. The teams that aren't in love with Phillips don't see him as a high pick, as one could expect. “
Projection: 2nd or 3rd round
CB Jourdan Lewis, Michigan, 5’10, 188 lbs (8th CB overall CBS)
Dane Brugler, CBS: “He routinely stays in phase in man coverage due to his balance and instincts as the space between him and receivers seems virtually nonexistent. Lewis also boasts quick eyes to locate the football with the aggressive ball skills to attack the catch point, appearing to want the ball more than receivers. Although Lewis might not crack the first round, primarily due to his size limitations, he could wind up being a steal later on day two for a team willing to look past his shorter stature, trusting his intriguing ability to suffocate passing windows.”
Projection: 2nd or 3rd Round
DT Eddie Vanderdoes, UCLA, 6’3, 320 lbs (18th DT overall CBS)
Rob Rang, CBS says: “Vanderdoes is better at stuffing the run than attacking quarterbacks. He does show some lateral agility to elude blockers as well as the vision and spatial awareness to "feel" blockers around him. He's powerful; incorporating a strong slap to knock would-be blockers away and the leg drive to simply walk opposing blockers into the pocket. Better yet, he often arrives with a thud as a tackler.”
Projection: 5th Round
ILB Ben Gedeon, Michigan, 6’3 247lbs (11th ILB overall CBS)
BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1 says: “Gedeon is a similar prospect to former Michigan linebacker Jake Ryan, but the post-knee injury version of Ryan. In 2016, Gedeon totaled 106 tackles with 15.5 tackles for a loss, 4.5 sacks and two passes batted. It was a huge jump over his junior (34 tackles), sophomore (17 tackles) and freshman (19 tackles) totals when he was a backup. Gedeon is a tough run defender, but he could have limitations, athletically, for pass coverage in the NFL.”
Projection: 3rd-4th Round
DT Larry Ogunjobi, Charlotte, 6’2, 304 lbs (10th DT overall CBS)
BAN-INCOMING-IN-3-2-1 says: “Ogunjobi turned in four seasons of solid production for Charlotte, including his senior year when he notched 65 tackles with 13.5 tackles for a loss, three sacks and two passes broken up. Ogunjobi had 62 tackles with 2.5 sacks as a junior and five sacks as a sophomore.”
Projection: 3rd Round
