The Cowboys select a potential successor for Barry Church.

The Dallas Cowboys have used the second of their four sixth-round picks on strong saftey Kavon Frazier out of Central Michigan.

Frazier is a reliable run defender, but what Frazier can do on special teams is probably what's going to keep him on the roster. And with Barry Church potentially hitting free agency next year, getting a strong safety makes sense. And ironically, Barry Church that is the exact comparison both NFL and CBS make.

Draft Projection: Round 5

Sources Tell Us

"I really like his potential because he's a big athlete who will hit you and immediately brings special teams value to the table." -- NFC South scout

NFL Comparison: Barry Church

Bottom Line

Frazier will immediately appeal to teams who value the eye test as he's big, physical and athletic, but his true draft value could lie in a team’s willingness to buy into him as a functional safety in coverage. Frazier's ability to support against the run and contribute immediately on special teams should lead to a third-day selection and an early backup role with a chance to compete for a starting spot down the road.

COMPARES TO: Barry Church, Cowboys - Another MAC product who excelled against the run and has some mishaps in the passing game. Church is a superb in-the-box safety and will have those moments in coverage to allow a big play. Frazier appears to be better suited for defending the passing game.

IN OUR VIEW: Frazier passes the eyeball test and his ability and leadership qualities are equally impressive. He is likely a later-round prospect who will carve out his role on special teams before getting reps at safety.

The Cowboys are now filling out the depth of their roster. With four picks in the sixth round, Dallas has a chance to get special teamers and possibly hit on a gem, and Frazier could be just such a guy.

With this pick, the Cowboys have selected two guys on offense, and five guys on defense.
