I studied some of their games. He switches around between the 3 and the 1. Some of it appears to be dependent on who is playing the other DT spot.

Consider that Marinelli would prefer two 3tech pass rushing types on the field together in the Nickel. The Cowboys play about 50% Nickel. That means that they prefer a 3tech type to take about 3/4 of all snaps for the 2 DT spots.

Also Marinelli prefers more of a 1/3 combo type player to play the 1tech position if possible. A guy like Paea in Chicago is a 1/3 combo type player. Josh Brent is one of the few 320 plus pure 1tech types that Marinelli has had.

Crawford and Suh would both be on the field in the Nickel. They would play some snaps together in the base with Suh at the 1 and they would rotate some snaps at the 3 in the base.
