BTB: Everything you need to know about the Randy Gregory situation

I hope Randy Gregory gets his life in order. He seems like a really good dude.

But if there’s anything I’ve learned about who to keep and who to release in the salary cap era, one of the biggest things you look at is RELIABILITY. For whatever reason- injury, or suspensions, or personal problems, you cannot commit valuable cap space to a player who cannot be counted on to be there when needed. Regardless of talent.

David Irving has been here 3 seasons and by the time he returns from his second suspension in a season, he will have missed 16 games since 2015. Why in hades would you keep a guy that is a ticking time bomb for another suspension? Next time it will be 10 games! Gregory is in the same boat.

Using a real world example, if you owned a business and were paying good money to an employee that misses work over 1/3 of the time, you would probably not keep them around at a high cost if they are unreliable. Because being able to count on someone matters.
Irving... Gregory... McClain... Spiller... Brent... Hardy... Williams... D.Wilson, all in the same boat. Hell, even Tank took steroids.

Cut them all?

Do you feel than anyone else in any occupation should be banned for life if the have a relapse with a drug or alcohol problem? Or just football? Would that also include anyone else hired by the NFL, teams and the such, or just players?
I feel like playing in the NFL is unlike any other job. It's more of a privilege and to throw it away after 3 chances then let him go find an ordinary job. Don't get me wrong there are so many people out there who are fighting life long battles with addictions and I'm for 2nd and 3rd chances and cutting people breaks but don't forget this has been an ongoing issue with Gregory! For his own good I hope he can stay clean regardless of if he is playing football or not.

There are plenty more guys that didn't wash out, you just didn't hear about them. And some of these guys you listed had harder drug addictions.
I don't like his odds. Guys with problems wash out more often than not in sports that test for their addiction. Guys like Art Schlichter, Steve Howe, Roy Tarpley, Daryl Strawberry, Doc Gooden, Todd Marinovich, Rolando McClain, and on and on...

If he could have the kind of career Strawberry and Gooden had before washing out, I would be okay with that.

Three years in the league and he's got 1 sack. What do you think?

Of course, he hasn't been active in the league for 3 years. Really only a portion of one year. But you are right that the odds aren't good

Not trying to be combative. I guess we can look at the bright side: He's got low mileage on him! ;)
