News: BTB: Former Cowboys guard Jonathan Cooper signs with the 49ers

The Cowboys have lost their 2017 starting left guard to the 49ers.

The Cowboys hole at left guard just got bigger as last year’s fill-in starter, Jonathan Cooper, signed a one-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers.

Cooper is a former first-round pick as he was selected seventh overall by the Arizona Cardinals in 2013. He injured his leg his rookie season and returned only to be a rotational linemen for them over the next couple seasons. He was part of the trade that send Chandler Jones to Arizona from New England.

After being released by the Cleveland Browns late in the 2016 season, the Cowboys signed him to kick the tires on this once touted top prospect. He came in handy too as Dallas put him to work last season, starting 13 games on the year. Unfortunately, he suffered an MCL sprain in the season finale against the Philadelphia Eagles that required surgery in January.

Because of injuries and free agent departures, the Cowboys offensive line had a lot of new faces in new places, but as you can see - Cooper did a solid job stepping up and filling the shoes left from Ron Leary.

In four seasons, Cooper has started 27 games. He’s an experienced linemen and will be a nice add for the 49ers.

It was unclear how interested the Cowboys were in bring him back as they could look at other options in an attempt to upgrade the position. One thing is sure - they have a gaping hole at left guard now and it needs to be addressed. Whether that means a higher investment come draft time or shelling out a little more money in free agency - look for the Cowboys to make a move. Of course, there’s always a chance the team could move La’el Collins back inside should they land another right tackle option instead.
