I'm guessing Paea, Carroll and Blanton are the 3.

Those players weren't signed to be long term players for the Cowboys. They were bandaids until the young guns could take over.

This myth keeps getting presented around here and it’s bogus.

For one, what young, studly 1 Tech was Paea holding the fort for? The answer, of course, is no one. Paea wasn’t a place holder. He was their typical solution to the 1 Tech, which is jus sign and play any old bum there and it will work out.

And Carroll wasn’t a place holder either. They tried to get him in multiple off seasons and gave him a two year deal. It’s clear they thought he could play and likely thought he’d be a big help as we played more zone.

FA 2017 for the Cowboys was poor. It’s amazing people try to spin it otherwise.

It's looks worse if those guys were here. We got paid to get rid of them.
Church was phenomenal this year. Carr and Claiborne were good, too.

Our offensive line went from great to average when Leary left.

Some late picks don't make it worth it.

The secondary improved this season.

LG was not the problem on the OLine.
The secondary needed Church to run the show. He's like Sean Lee.

Leary can dominate. He's nasty. Cooper is just a guy.

If they were going to spend 9M per on an OLineman, it should have been an OT. Collins could play LG but practice both spots and essentially be the backup OT.

The difference in Cooper and Leary didn't cost them games. Cooper is actually a little better at some things like 2nd level blocking.

The scheme was limited with Church because he is slow. If they played the best players Church would have been a part-time player by the end of the season.

did they "play their cards right" in free agency or were we just cheap? I mean we sure could have used 1 more player for depth in the o line and linebacking core, in fact could have put us in the playoffs

People love to talk about draft trades but much like their FA spending the Cowboys have been pretty conservative in recent years trading in the draft. They could easily not do anything and just select where they are.
Last draft I felt that was the right move. Deep draft of the positions we needed, dB.
This year could be different but I general giving two picks or more for one pick is risky. If you trade up, you better be right because of the cost, at least early in the draft

If posters here love Leary and Church they need to indentify the players who we cut to get the 17 Million to those guys in salary.

Leary is a better player but the dropoff wasn't worth that much money. Church is a good leadership guy but he would have been completely exposed if he had to play the coverage schemes Dallas played this year. There is a reason he only had good seasons when playing in the box, his coverage is way below average.

It's a fan site.

What a perfectly Trumpian response: If you don't like the message, first attack the messenger.

What's wrong with being excited about four comp picks as opposed to none? Of course, that's not a CZ thing, because we like to formulate clever retorts to anything even remotely positive and the celebrate ourselves for our one-upmanship.

If he was the Sean Lee of the secondary he would have been playing in coverage - but he wasn't because he can't cover.. He isn't Sean Lee, he is Kavon Frazier with more experience and more leadership.

Dallas used to spend big in free agency and it didn't work so they went the totally opposite way and ignored the big free agents and looked for mid level bargains. That's hasn't worked as well. They have some cap space to work with so I hope they find a happy medium moving forward. Maybe filling one or two of the biggest glaring holes with a top 2-3 free agent at that position and then looking for bargains and to the draft. You have to get better in the offseason. You can't stand pat or lose talent and not replace it.

At what, Call of Duty? Candy Crush?

The guy is an 8 year veteran who is good in run support and clubhouse leadership. If he was "awesome", he would still be wearing a Cowboys uniform.

Dallas intentionally skipped FA to focus on Comp picks the last few years

That was the plan...... you end up with guys like Paea and Carroll when you dumpster dive

It is delayed gratification but the payoff is this draft and this FA period...... we are flush with cap space and draft picks

We will forgo Comp picks this year and sign a FA or two to go with DLaw, Hitchens and Cooper

Four interceptions, bunch of tackles, played tremendous this season. He was their key signing.
