1. How to get a leg up for your roster projections

The surest way to find out which players may have a firmer grip on a 53-man roster spot is to look at the first-team special teams units. Here's how the first-team kick return unit lined up today:

Jeff Heath - Damien Wilson - James Hanna -Kavon Frazier - Chidobe Awuzie

Mark Nzeocha - Geoff Swaim - Kyle Wilber

Keith Smith - Rod Smith

Different players lined up at the return spot over the course of practice, so it doesn't look like theCowboys have settled on who their returner will be yet.

I was too far away to see all 11 players lining up on the first-team kickoff unit, I'll look to add that tomorrow. For now, the 10 players above look to have a roster spot locked down, perhaps not as a core player on offense or defense, but certainly as a core special teamer.

2. DT Lewis Neal gets a promotion

DT Lewis Neal has gotten some good reports early in camp, even if I had a hard time seeing that in the early practices, largely because I'm usually quite far away from the O-line/D-line drills.

But today Neal got some snaps with the first team as the 3-technique. Obviously, Maliek Collins is still out with a hip injury, so it's not like he's outplaying everybody, but his quickness and propensity to get up the field has gotten him noticed enough to warrant some first-team work.

3. Good day for the edge rushers

DeMarcus Lawrence had some good snaps against Tyron Smith. Smith of course hadn't practiced in a while, but you take what you can get against Tyron.

Taco Charlton was also quite active today, getting into the backfield for what would have been a tackle for loss. He also had two wins in 1-on-1 pass rush drills. Charlton had a somewhat slow start to camp, but he's been catching up fast in recent practices.

Tyrone Crawford may not have the flashiest pass rush moves, but he's easily the strongest of all DEs, and today used that strength to bully through the O-line for what would have been a sack of Prescott. Crawford has locked down that LDE spot.

Wow a rookie taking time to get acclimated to the NFL? Who knew?
Im still disappointed he didnt get 10 sacks in the HOF game.

Marinelli said Taco " wasnt good enough" during the HOF game. This is a Michigan product that is known for taking tough coaching well. Disapproval of his HOF performance may have gotten him to up his game

I would have been ok with just 5, but zero?

"Crawford has locked down that LDE spot....." Exactly where he belongs.

I think given Collin's progress at the #3 DT spot, the LDE spot is the place for Crawford.

That being said I (along with every other Cowboy fan) would luv to see him get 700 healthy snaps and come close to 10 sacks.

I'm pretty sure Crawford likes it a LOT better on the edge, rather than fighting the plug uglies in the middle.

Sure would be nice to see this old boy come through this season, for a WHOLE season.

How many years left does he have on his contract?

DT Lewis Neal has a good chance to make the team if he can stay healthy. Moore and Irving are suspended to open the season and Tapper got nicked up again in practice. I think this next preseason game could be a make-or-break game for him.

I just love hearing the news of 3rd and 4th string players being forced onto the team and playing on game-day.
Warms my heart... Wait, no it doesn't.

Looks to me like no one is forcing Neal on the team. Looks like Neal is forcing his way onto the team with good practices and play in OTAs, camp, and preseason game. So, yes, it should warm your heart.

We'll see buddy. We'll see how much my heart is warmed by Neal "forcing his way onto the team". I hope a lot.

I don't get that they are forcing Neal in. Sounds like he is earning it. Wonder what is up with Paea and Thornton.

Neal was one of the best players in the HOF game. He consistently got penetration into the backfield.

Paea/Thortoon are 1-tech. Neal is 3-tech.

I think we're gonna see the two veterans (Lawrence and Crawford) own the starting DE spots until some young guys take it from them. I know a lot of people are excited to see guys like Taco, Tapper and Irving win the job, but they're gonna have to earn it. Doesn't help that Irving has given Crawford a 4-game head start with his suspension.
