In one of the more predictable moves since the 53-man roster was “finalized,” Kellen Moore will be back with the Cowboys.
If you’ve been worried about the potential of rookie undrafted free agent quarterback Cooper Rush being the only depth behind Dak Prescott on the Cowboys 53-man roster, worry not my friend. Veteran Kellen Moore has agreed on a return to America’s Team.
QB Kellen Moore has agreed in principle and will sign his contract in next few hours to return to Cowboys, source said.

The Cowboys initially released Kellen when finalizing their first version of their 53-man roster this past Saturday. Many across Cowboys land, including BTB, speculated that (based on word to that point) Rico Gathers would soon be placed on injured reserve and that Kellen would take that spot. That is exactly what happened.
Kellen Moore is practice squad-eligible should the Cowboys elect to choose that course of action in terms of where they want to put him, but that feels unlikely. Jerry Jones has said for weeks now that the Cowboys will carry three quarterbacks, and they now have have their trinity.
Whether you are a big fan of Kellen Moore or not, you have to give it up to the Cowboys here. Let’s assume that their objective was to get (have protected ownership of) Rico Gathers, Cooper Rush, and Kellen Moore. We’ve discussed here at BTB how it appears irresponsible to carry Moore because that could lead to the loss of a player such as Noah Brown for example.
The Cowboys obviously knew the perceived value of all of their players. They understood that there was no way Rico Gathers, Cooper Rush, or Noah Brown would get through unclaimed, and they can undoubtedly see that Kellen Moore isn’t too highly thought of on a national scale. They used these perceptions to their advantage to the point that they ultimately ended up with everyone they wanted.
For his career Kellen Moore has 779 yards, four touchdowns, and six interceptions. Now it remains to be seen which backup quarterback will be the true number two on the roster.
