BTB: The Dallas Cowboys as a Top-5 team in sacks? Surprise, it could happen

Last year the Cowboys finished with 36 sacks on the year which ranked them 13th in the league. This was a solid improvement from the previous year when they had 31 sacks and finished 25th in the league. But what will the 2017 unit look like? With no splash made in free agency and a rookie edge rusher who isn’t likely to make a big impact right away, some fans are concerned that the pass rush could be in trouble this season. There isn’t a single player on the defensive line that has anyone excited about possibly reaching double-digit sacks.

That may sound a little deflating, but it’s not. The Cowboys will use a committee approach and collectively they may surprise some people with their production. What if I told you the Cowboys could finish top five in sacks this season? Sound ridiculous, right? Let’s breakdown each player and see what type of numbers they could be looking at.

Just for fun here's my estimate:
Mayowa 7 sacks
Collins 6 sacks
Lawrence 6 sacks
Irving 6 sacks
Crawford 5 sacks
Charlton 4 sacks
Paea 3 sacks
Moore 3 sacks

That equals 40 and not including what we'll get with LB's and DB's blitzing I expect around 40-45 sacks total.
So our entire defense line will double Von Millers sack total?

I've been clammoring these sentiments for awhile.. none of these sack totals are unrealistic for each individual and yes.. it could happen.

I think the Cowboys will be top 5 in sacks and I will make a bet with anyone here.

They are top-5, I eat an entire bake-at-home pizza while mostly drunk.

They aren't top-5, I don't eat an entire bake-at-home pizza while mostly drunk.

Who wants to challenge me?

Man, those are some seriously high stakes.

You sure you want to go there?

5 guys with 5 or more sacks? That's never happening too.

So was us being #13 last year in sacks out of 32 teams.

Okay, I checked. Dallas had 36 sacks last year. Arizona led the NFL with 48.
12 sacks is a big leap. However, if they could've managed just 2 more sacks,
Dallas would've finished tied for 9th. Doable.

C'mon Risen.. now your just trolling. The Boys were 1.5 sacks away from five guys having 5 or more sacks last year even with Lawrence only adding 1 sack of his own due injuries that derailed his season.. And that's not counting the five sacks that came from LBers & CBs

The DL did improve.. we brought back the core guys in Collins, Irving (Contract year), Crawford, & Mayowa.. add young talent in Charlton & Tapper, a veteran needing to prove his worth in Moore, a seasoned Marenilli guy in Paea, and a healthy Demarcus Lawrence. They could be a dark horse.

I would think a more important number than total sacks would be sacks per pass play.

Get the calculator back out. Mayowa had 6, Collins 5, T. Crawford 4.5, Irving 4, J. Crawford 3.

3.5 sacks away. In a season where they played with a lead most of the time.

You can eliminate Irving and J.Crawford out of the equation. Irving's not getting 5 when he's back from suspension. J. Crawford isn't here and sucks anyway. Unless there's an injury, Taco puts a serious dent into Mayowa's stats. He's not getting 5 if Lawrence and Taco stay healthy all year.

Collins gets you 5. Maybe Lawrence. Maybe Taco or Mayowa, depending on which guy ends up playing the bigger role. So 3 players is best case scenario with this mediocre group.
