A look at how the odds have shifted for the Cowboys after Romo's injury last night.
On Sunday morning, we wrote that early Week 3 Lines from the Westgate Las Vegas SuperBook had the Cowboys as -4.5 favorites over the Falcons. Obviously, that was before Tony Romo's injury, and Brandon Weeden's subsequent promotion to starting Cowboys' QB for the forseeable future.
And while Weeden played about as well as a QB could have played yesterday - Weeden completed all seven of his passes for 73 yards and a TD, did not get sacked, and did not commit a turnover - Vegas doesn't like Weeden as much as it did Romo:
In early reactions, many sportsbooks now have the Week 3 game against the Falcons as a pick 'em, and Sportbook.ag has even installed the Falcons as -3 favorites. We'll see over the course of the week where the line ultimately settles.
Larry Hartstein of Sportsline.com talked to Jay Rood, vice president of race and sports at MGM resorts about the Cowboys' chances.
"We'll have to let it play out on the field," Jay Rood told SportsLine. "We don't want to have a knee-jerk reaction and put ourselves in a jeopardy situation. Weeden has been a starter before. He doesn't have the playmaking ability, the improvisational skills, that Romo has, but on the flip side he'll probably play within the regimen of the system a little more.
"It doesn't necessarily crush their season. I think Weeden can go in there for six or seven games or whatever, and I don't think they're going to fall off the shelf by any means. They've got a great offensive line. He's going to hand the ball off and as he gets comfortable, he'll pass more."
Sportsline have revised their season projection from 9.5 wins for the Cowboys to 8.3 wins, and Hartstein adds that MGM Resorts have raised Dallas from 8/1 to 10/1 to win the Super Bowl, while their 2-0 start in the conference sees their odds of winning the NFC East remain steady at 4/1.
In any case, next week's game against the Falcons will be the only game featuring two unbeaten playing each other, and who the Cowboys play that game, favored or not, will tell us a lot about what to expect from the coming Romo-less games.
