Bubble Players

Is our backup OL situation so bad that Chaz Green couldn’t have been cut in the offseason? With the addition of Cam Fleming and Connor Williams, why is Green still on the roster?
They're going to execute Chaz Green to kick off camp and set the tone. I am tired of just cutting players, I want some shot. Maybe hang one or two and pull at least one behind a boat as shark bait while on the coast. Yes, drastic measures but I am getting fed up with this and these injuries? Put a cage with a starving rat on one of the injured players' faces and see how quickly the others heal. I want The Turk armed with a scythe.

I think Chaz Green is being given the benefit of the doubt. HE was bad in that Atlanta game but he shouldn't have even been allowed to be that bad in that game. That game was more on the coach than it was him. They liked him prior to that game it was just about getting healthy. Wouldn't shock me if they have him for depth reasons. He simply just may not be a swing tackle in this league.

Because he's probably a decent 8th or 9th OL if we keep him.

People seem to forget that he actually played decently a couple of years ago.

Don't be surprised if he makes the team along with Martin and Fleming as backup OL.

I think Grandmaster B might be allowed to become a full time rapper

Chaz actually played well in relief of Tyron Smith in 2016, so maybe that's still in the team's mind. It's pretty hard to get the image of that one game last year out of my mind though.

Jo

Deonte Thompson is likely gone unless none of the young guys show up.

Or they keep Thompson on the 53 thinking some of the young guys will make it to the practice squad and then move them up when there are inevitable injuries.

You could argue he single handedly cost us the 2017 season with his disaster in the Atl game.

Thats true. He still isn't costing us anything other than a roster spot. If they find a better player or his roster spot needs to be opened up it will be gone. But right now this minute he isn't costing us much, or maybe anything. Risk vs reward is low right now.

We'll see. We as posters overrate 40 speed.

Also the FO doesnt care all that much for it given their draft history with WRs.

So between that, his one year minimal deal, we gaining a comp pick if we cut him, and that he plays at a very crowded position I'd say 50% is optimistic but who knows.

I will say this: I think they have shown in the offseason speed has become more of a priority.

I would love if this is true, what makes you say this though?

They specifically said that Thompson was a priority because of his speed and the ability to take the top off of the defense. His speed is supposedly very top shelf.

They also added Austin who has speed to burn. I think they are going to use speed to back 8 men out of the box so Zeke can run wild.

Its was a fairly large draft haul this year with 9 players drafted and 17 undrafted free agents signed, totaling 26 rookies added to the roster for training camp. Several key veterans have left the team, including Jason Witten, Dez Bryant, and Orlando Scandrick. Whatever happens to cut the roster down to 53, the 2018 Cowboys will have be a very different looking roster than 2017.

Obviously, many of the 26 rookies won’t make the final roster, but there will likely be at least 3-4 that either start at some point this year or will be immediate impact players. Clearly, LVE and Connor Williams will probably be day one starters, with Gallup and Schultz also likely to compete for major playing time. From there, who knows?

But my question is this- Who are the players going into TC (both rookies and veterans) who have a lot to prove in order to make this team? I will divide these bubble players into 3 groups: Dead Men walking, Better show something, pretty safe. All on these lists are considered “on the bubble” to make this team.

Dead Men Walking (almost certainly goners)
Chaz Green T (should have been cut at halftime in Atlanta)
Jameil Showers S? (how many positions are they going try with him?)
Most of the 17 UFAs that are mostly camp bodies (1-2 may make it)

Better show something (have a chance but better look good quickly)
Lewis Neal and Jamize Olawale- FBs- only one will survive TC
Charles Tapper- DE-he’s been hurt a lot which eventually takes away your value. If he can’t get healthy...
Joe Thomas, LB- a ST guy.
Rico Gathers- TE despite the fan drool, he’s not really done much. Time to prove he’s a FB player or adios!
Noah Brown- WR- he has lots of upside, but this is a crowded position so he better have a good camp.
Marques White- CB- may be pushed in camp to show he’s still worth keeping.
Jihad Ward- DT- the Switzer trade acquisition who hasn’t shown much in his career so far. (Kinda like Switzer, lol)

Probably safe (but a bad camp could hurt)
Cooper Rush and Mike White-QBs vying to be backups. Team may keep both.
Kony Ealy DE- offseason FA who should be a decent rotation player...should be.
Deonte Thompson- WR- another FA signing this offseason who is not a world beater, but should make the “committee” because of speed.
Bo Scarborough- RB- he better prove he can play STs or he may be a practice squad guy. He could also be a solid RB backup.

Anyway, this is all subjective of course. Any players you want to add or take off these lists?

For a real analysis, you need to list all players at each group (OL, DL, DB, etc..). It will be fairly obvious who is on the bubble if you do it that way.

In regards to your specific comments:

Players that were on the practice squad have not even ascended to bubble status. Marquez White, Showers, etc..

TWill could start on NFI/PUP but his 3.5M salary is guaranteed if he passes a physical before game 1.

DT Collins could start on PUP.

They don't have to do anything with Gregory until he is reinstated. If he is not reinstated until near or after game 1, they will get some number of weeks before he must be moved to the 53 man roster or cut.

Chaz Green has a better chance of staying than guys like Lewis Neal.

A FB is always at risk of the team not carrying one.

Joe Thomas is unlikely to be on the bubble. They are thin at LB and Thomas has started NFL games.

Rico, Jarwin, Swaim and the draft pick at TE. They carried 4 TEs last season (Witten, Hanna, Swaim Jarwin).

Bo Scarbrough is a 7th round pick that has done nothing with the Cowboys up to this point.

They love Noah Brown's blocking but they are crowded at WR.

Deonte Thompson has 1 million guaranteed.

Marinelli loves Crawford but if Taco, Ealy or anybody bump him as a starter, then his 6M salary will force Stephen Jones to re-access his value.

They finished last season with just 1 backup QB.

Why not? He has shown outside of the Falcons disaster that he can be a very capable tackle. I think he just got all kinds of messed up moving inside. End of the day he probably gets cut anyhow, but you need need bodies in case there are injuries.

I have to laugh at all these geniuses who think Scarbrough has to play special teams to make this roster.

Cause Rod Smith is super talented and stuff.

He's a stone cold mortal lock to be the backup RB this year.

BO is far from safe
Injuries in camp will save someone
But there are many guys fighting for few jobs and the number who need to show something is much higher than the locks
And that’s not a bad thing
Competition is good for everyone

No reason to cut him till you have to cut him
I don’t know why people want to cut guys then sign another for training camp
Green needs a good camp or he won’t be here but there was no reason to cut him till after camp

This offensive scheme doesn't need Bob Hayes v 2.0 to outrun DBs. It needs crisp route runners with quick moves, separation, and talon-grip hands.
That being said, watching Hayes fly down the field was a majestic sight.

Its hard to cut a player you traded a quality player for {Ward}
All reports are the coaches like WR Brown
Rico its your time go get it

They got a dude with #47 named
Scott Daly rookie out of Notre Dame slotted as LS,,,the reason I'm pointing this out is cuz' it's probably #91's last season ( I hope not,but Their obviously on that inside track,,, ) I wouldn't be surprised if a couple 2-5 year league vets don't make this roster.
