If Simms is released, he is going to Miami. Not here.

Miami has Josh McCown who they signed to a 2 year 6 mill deal with about 2.5 mill in bonuses, 2007 second round pick John Beck, and 2008 second round pick Chad Henne.

Getting Simms would mean dumping one of those three guys. I doubt they would do that. What are they going to do? Cut Beck?

Nooo, my brother.
I can just imagine a conversation between Father Simms and Son Simms.

Daddy: What? You want to work for that blow-hard in Miami?
Son: He's the GM not the coach.
Daddy: Still, he'll play mind games with you.
Son: I can handle it. I played for Gruden.
Daddy: No, you don't know this Parcells guy like I do.
Son: Don't worry, I can handle myself.
Daddy: OK, so you won't play much in Dallas, but at least there is job security there and Jerra and Wade are the nicest guys you'll ever work for. In Miami you'll be picked apart because of that crummy team and it's just a matter of time before Parcells will start the comparisons and accuse you of not having your Daddy's guts and skills. Then he'll make snarky remarks to the media about your progress or lack of it. He's a man eater. He's bitter and vindictive. The direct opposite of Wade and Jerra.
Son: Dallas, huh?
Daddy: If you want a Super Bowl ring.
Son: Dallas, here I come!

I can dream, can't I?

That seems to be what Viktor is saying.

I want to ask a serious question. It is not meant to inflame or get some huge flamewar going.

However if Simms did not play for a certain college team that many on this board follow...would we even be considering him?

Now I know we are only talking Backup QB here but maybe it is just me but I just have never been too impressed with him and think he has been mostly hype due to his name and due to the school he went to.

I am not arguing that we don't need to replace Brad. I just don't know why we could not look at someone else who either would be cheaper and have more upside. Or just find a different vet who could probably be just as good.

The reason we are talking about him is that he may be available. If you want someone else, please tell us who... There are very few quality QB's that are available.

Please name someone who Dallas could consider to be a quality backup QB.

I think Garrett may be comfortable with what he has right now.

That would imply that Bartel is farther along than any of us realize in becoming the backup. Have you heard something?

Brad is on borrowed time and should seriously consider retiring...every time I hear about him in camp it is when he is unable to throw the ball far enough (very very very weak arm). Even with Bartel, I think the Cowboys should consider bringing in another QB.

Hey, both of you guys. We'll never know until we get him here.

Jerra! Get that deal done before I get back from repairing that radio transmitter!

I heartily disagree. Garrett might be resigned to the situation but not comfortable.

I agree with "resigned" but that means if there is an opportunity to upgrade the position -- he would do it. Hence our discussion of possible candidates, and Simms is an interesting prospect...

Is there another candidate that might be available that is better? I can't think of one offhand...

I doubt Garcia would come here. Not with T.O. on the roster. Garcia does nothing but win. Wouldn't mind him as our number two, but really do not believe it will happen.

If Brad has degenerated to worse than last year than maybe you guys are correct and Garrett will be looking to other options. My guess is that Bartel is at least two years away....if ever.

Simms and Gruden have "relationship issues" hmmm. May I ask, is Simms too laidback for the overwrought Gruden. Alright Jerry go get Matt Jones and Chris Simms.

I don't follow that team and am not a fan of that college team.

I have however seen Simms play a bit in the NFL. He has shown flashes -- he's got a pretty solid arm and seems to have a bit of that intangible leadership quality (he was actually starting to show that a good deal right before he got hurt). He learned the right way in this league -- by having his butt pressed against the pine for most of his career.

He clearly is not a starting quality QB and likely will never be one. But I think he could be a good backup because he has enough arm strength to keep a team honest.

Backups pretty much come in two types. Most are either a good decision maker or have good physical tools - few have both qualities (otherwise they would be starting). In both cases the staff has to scale back the play book. Personally, i prefer the good physical tools guys because you can keep plays that use the entire field (i.e., long passes etc.). For a good decision making-bad arm backup you pretty much take away all of your intermediate to deep passing game.

That said, the only scenario I could see for Simms here is if a) he was replacing Johnson and b) Bartel remained on the roster.

I agree with your take here and I would be all for him replacing Johnson.

i semi-follow texas and i dont even want Simms his reptured spleen to me shows he doesn't have the physical toughness to play in this leauge, i do give him a round of applause for finishing the game though

Being tough enough to protect your spleen from rupturing is nonsensical. You can't protect your internal organs from injury by being anything including tough. I guess if you are a Marvel's superhero maybe. And refusing to come out after that trauma is the definition of being tough.

Just because Tampa's trying to corner the market on QBs doesn't mean any of them are potential starters except for Garcia.

I think most people here want Simms in spite of following him in college. Seriously.

I think most people here want anyone other than Brad Johnson because of their belief that he has no arm. I think most people have an unrealistic view of this issue.

Don't think Garcia wants to play behind Romo

As to Simms, if you think he wouldn't be an upgrade to johnson, well, go figure.
