Bud Adams says he plans to keep Jeff Fisher
Posted by Mike Florio on January 6, 2010 11:46 AM ET
Despite speculation that 87-year-old Titans owner Bud Adams was considering giving the finger to coach Jeff Fisher, Adams says that he plans to keep the league's longest-tenured head coach.

"Jeff has two more years on his contract, and the way things are going, we are going to be pleased to have him here for the next two years and more years than that down the road,'' Adams told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. "I think he'll get us in the Super Bowl next year."

The comments come amid a belief in some circles that Fisher is angling to escape. ESPN's Chris Mortensen, whose son played for the Titans during the preseason, has repeatedly (well, we've heard it twice -- but that's technically repeatedly) thrown out the suggestion that the Bears or the Cowboys might come calling. At one point, Mort suggested that Fisher might be able to force his way out of Nashville due to the fact that owner Bud Adams insisted on the quarterback change from Kerry Collins to Vince Young, which possibly constitutes a breach of Fisher's contract.

And Adams apparently has been paying attention to the chatter.

"Jeff knows what he is doing and he loves Nashville," Adams told Wyatt. "I don't think he's interested in going anywhere else. He's going to do a great job for us moving down the road.''

So it's possible that Adams is ready to make a change, and that he's hoping someone will offer up draft picks and/or cash for Fisher. Eight years ago, the Buccaneers gave up two first-round picks, two second-round picks, and $8 million in order to land Jon Gruden from the Raiders.

For now, the Bears are off the market. But the Cowboys could be looking, based on the outcome of Saturday night's playoff game.

If Jerry ever contemplated giving up two 1st and two 2nds for Fisher...We might have to make a road trip.

Didn't the Titans start out 0-6? It would be nuts for Tennessee to allow him to walk after an 8-8 finish.

Vince saved Fischers job.

Why it was Adams who insisted on benching Collins and having Young play. Only when that happened did Tenn start winning. I like Jeff Fisher but the way Collins was playing he should have made that call himself.

It would now. I think the gist of the rumor/story is that the whole bench Kerry and start Vince thing was a sore situation between the owner and the HC. The rumor/story seems to suggest that Fisher wants out.

I found it odd that people in the media kept suggesting Fisher would be on the Cowboys radar but never could figure out why as he was locked up. So maybe there was indeed some serious sore situations going on behind the scenes with Bud Adams and Jeff Fisher. And with the way they finished up it might have changed...at least from the owner's standpoint.

He aslo coached a team that was 13-3 last year to 0-6.

I'd love to have Fisher as coach of the Cowboys but:

1. I think Wade already did enough to keep his job, and the team is playing well for him. Continuity counts.

2. I'd never give up draft picks to get a coach.

3. Adams would be nuts to let him go. He's a top-notch coach with a proven track record.

I thought you couldn't trade draft picks for coaches under contract anymore.

I don't see a lot of talent there, other than some Olinemen and Johnson.

13-3 in '08 was just short of a miracle. Any coach who can get that team to 13-3 with a washed-up Kerry Collins at QB has accomplished something.

Why? I mean what has Fischer won? How long has he been there?

Fisher wouldn't be unemployed for very long, unless he just wanted to be.

He should be as someone who sees a ton of the Titans and has family members that are fans. They probably wouldn't agree with me, but he hasn't won a playoff game since 2003 and his team is one of the most undisciplined in the NFL.

I agree. I like Jeff but he has been there 16 years they have 6 winning season during that time.

They have quite a few talented front seven players. Kyle Vanden Bosch, Jason Jones, Tony Brown, Keith Bullock, Jacob Ford, etc.

Their secondary was also a strength last year, but they had a rash of injuries.

Yup and it hasn't been because they lack talent.

And people want to ditch the coach who has had one losing season in, what, nine seasons?

Fisher must have great press conferences.

I don't think Jeff Fisher is a bad coach I don't think he is as great as some think he is. I do think if Jeff were to be fired he would get a chance coaching some where else but his coaching career has a lot of ups and down with more downs than ups. :laugh2:

He looks good on the sidelines. :laugh2:

Hey, we agree on something! :laugh2:

Coaches, especially veteran ones, tend to resist lineup changes too much. Tennessee was going nowhere and Collins had lost whatever he had. I never understood how Fisher couldn't see that. His senile, old boss could even see it.
