YOUR DALLAS COWBOYS (according to a columnist at something called Grantland). Assuming this is true, is anyone else surprised ? I keep hearing how we made great strides getting out of cap hell, though that might have meant 2015 ? Still surprised we are highest in the league this year...

Those strides meant taking a hit for a couple years. The moves that have been made have largely been designed with 2015 in mind. If I'm not mistaken, the majority of that total is from Ware and Miles Austin, both of whom will come off the books after this year.

That's unsurprising given the release of Ware. We've been tight the last three years, no doubt.

One day, though, I'd also like to see a list of unused cap space for each time. They probably exist and just don't get as much play in Dallas, where that isn't a problem. But you know there are teams that put themselves at a similar competitive disadvantage by not using all the cap available to them each year.

The majority of dead money this season is DeMarcus Ware ($8.5715M) and Jay Ratliff ($6.928M).

Miles Austin ($2.7494M) was a June release, so his biggest dead money money hit will come next year ($5.1062M).

The other dead money hits of note this season are Nate Livings ($2.1M), Marcus Spears ($1.4M) and Kyle Orton ($1.1275M).

Ah sorry about that. The Stevie Johnson and Fitzpatrick deals was pretty bad even compared to things we have done.

NP. I don't care about the Bills enough to ferret thru it all. You can look at the top of each list and get a good idea where a lot is going though.

If there is one thing I dislike about the NFL the most, it's the financial shenanigans and dead money affecting a teams ability to compete while players get paid to do absolutely nothing after they have left a club.

I get the idea behind the cap, it keeps it competitive and prevents teams from simply buying a championship. But if a player doesn't perform for you, a team should be free to sever ties, paying out their contract and freeing up cap space for a player who can/will perform.
