Naw, too much dough and too far off. I've debated waiting to see how the Bulldozer situation pans out and what price cuts would result but I've waited long enough. 3 Years is longer than I typically like to wait, but you can't do jack with LGA775 and DDR2 is fading fast so I've got to start from the ground up.

I haven't seen any new Bulldozer news or release dates. All I've heard so far is AMD's CEO resigning lol:laugh1:. It's a shame too because I need AMD to actually pressure Intel into releasing Ivy Bridge. There's no guarantee right now. Just rumors.

Yep, and I'm tired of waiting as is.

Have you pulled the trigger yet?

Look's good. I'm still waiting for 2 components to be released before I start my build. I'm not really in a rush and with luck prices may go down on other parts while i wait.

I'm not sure anyone who isn't doing large compiles, running a big DB, or professional video editing really uses six cores today. :)

This.

You are almost definitely not going to ever need that much power, unless you are doing the above quote. No amount of gaming needs that much power either.

Alright here's the final build, I revised some things and changed the case.

Lancool K62
Corsair HX 750 Watt Modular PSU
i5 2500K
GTX 580
G.SKILL 8GB DDR3 1333 7-7-7-24
MSI P67A-GD55 (Was only $10 more than the C series and has better SLI)
OCZ Vertex 2, 100GB (I wanted the C300 for Sata 3 but it was too expensive)
CM Hyper 212+

If I were building a system I'd go with the MSI Twin Frozr GTX 560 Ti cards. You can get two of them for the same price as a GTX 580 and they outperform the 580 in a lot of games. If you game over 1920x1200 you may want to reconsider though since the 560's only come with 1GB of memory.

I think right now the 560 is one of the better price to performance cards out there. I think it even outperforms the Radeon 6900 series in some benchmarks and it can be OC'd quite nicely.

And of course the other alternative is wait for Ivy Bridge which may be released at the end of this year. I believe its on the 22 nm manufacturing process and it's supposed to be an enthusiast level chip as if Sandy Bridge isn't good enough. :laugh1:
SB is plenty for me and will be for the foreseeable future. IB as stated will be enthusiast level and will have enthusiast level prices. You can get the i5 2500k from microcenter.com if you have on close to you for $180, that's a sick price.

Yeah, I caved in. Everything should be here on Monday.

I already have a gtx 480 and a corsair ax1200.

Oh yeah, I bought the c300 knowing that the c400 would be coming out next month, along with intel's sata 3.0 ssd drive, and ocz vertex 3 drive.

Yeah I'd probably go two 560s too if I didn't have a Gtx 480 from EVGA. I registered this card as soon as I got it so it has a lifetime warranty. I don't know if EVGA still offers that anymore. I heard they started charging for warranties now.

Yeah I heard their new warranty policy kind of sucks but oh well. I'll try and get some pictures of the system once I get everything and finish it.

Massive Intel chipset recall.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/31/intel-finds-sandy-bridge-chipset-design-flaw-shipments-stopped/

All LGA 1155 Boards have been deactivated on Newegg. Apparently it affects the sata 3 Gb/s controllers only. Looks like I'll have to RMA my board once Intel comes out with a fix. :bang2:

"Intel will begin shipping the fixed version of the chipset in late February. The recall will reduce Intel's revenue by around $300 million and cost around $700 million to completely repair and replace affected systems."

Ouch.

I'm just about to build two whitebox servers and create an active / passive HA Openfiler cluster out of them, but I've decided to go with an AMD Athlon II X4 645 Propus. Only about $100, but it's a filer and it doesn't need huge processing power.

The only bad thing about that setup is that the cables on the PSU aren't real long, but otherwise it looks good, it's very similar to what I built last year.

Is the AX series any different cable length wise?

After doing some reading it's not all that big of a deal as people are making it out to be.

The issue has only been reproducible under very high temps. What I suggest doing, if you have 1 HD and 1 CD/DVD is to plug both into the SATA 3 ports which aren't affected by this. If you have 2 HDD and 1 CD/DVD, plug both HDD into SATA 3 and the CD/DVD into SATA 2 (Which is used far less) when your motherboard manufacturer starts doing RMA's for the affected motherboards (March/April) then RMA yours in.

The people this really sucks for is those who haven't ordered one already, though I still see them on sale in a few places.

Yeah, it only affects the SATA II controllers and the degradation is supposed to happen over time. Somewhere between 5-15% will be effected I heard.

I'm guessing you mean for those who have "already ordered one".

Doing an RMA on a MB when the computer is already built really sucks. Not just because you have to take it apart, but because you also have to go without while it's gone.

Depends on the person. If you've done proper cable management and have a low fuss case and don't have a really complex water cooling system it's not that bad. A lot of times, manufacturers will also cross ship so that they'll send your motherboard off the same day and/or wait until you receive it and then you send the old one off.

It can potentially be a pain, though.
