btw, not sure what you mean by cable management in a PC. (zip tie the cables?) There are minimal cables. Now, some of my network closets have hundreds of cables! nyc loves color coding by type / destination and raceways! ...and network maps!

Well it affects all brands of motherboard based on the p67 chipset (and I think h67?)

Of course I'd rather not have purchased it, but if you have it already it's on a minor inconvenience if you even need to RMA it at all, which I probably will just to be on the safe side.

As for cable management, yes arrange and organize the cables to improve airflow and reduce dust collection..

Nah, building with it. I've been on this E8400 with dual 8800's since February of 2008. I'm willing to deal with an RMA in a few months once they become available. Sending it back now won't do anything, I'll still have to wait for the updated boards.

What a coincidence. I'm supposed to get my shipment today as well. I'm contemplating on sending it back. If I do this, I'll have to wait -- possibly till April or May. Apparently not all p67 chipsets are affected. They are still coming up with a list.

A problem requiring a "silicon fix" is bad news in the chipset business, and sadly that's what Intel is announcing. Its new Intel 6 Series chipset, Cougar Point, has been found to have a flaw, something to do with the SATA controller. Intel is indicating that the ports can "degrade over time," leading to poor i/o performance down the road. All shipments have been stopped and a fix has been implemented for new deliveries, but it sounds like recalls will be starting soon for those with this ticking time bomb silicon within. It isn't a critical problem right now, though, so if you own a Sandy Bridge Core i5 or Core i7 system keep computing with confidence while looking for a recall notice, but it is bad news for Intel's bottom line: the company is advising a $300 million hit to revenue.

Update: Jimmy sent us a chat log with an Intel customer service representative indicating that this recall only affects "some desktop boards based on Intel P67 chipset," that the H67 chipset boards appear to not be affected, but that the company doesn't have a comprehensive list yet. We've certainly seen cases where CSRs don't have all the info in this sort of situation, but still we'd advise waiting a bit before tearing your new mobo out and bringing it back to the store.

It's done! Boy it rocks, way better than my old system. I took a picture with the crappy cell cam but you can't see a thing.

As always, Newegg remains 100% committed to our customers' total satisfaction. In keeping with our commitment to our customers, we are extending the return period for your motherboard by 90 days or until replacements become available from the manufacturer, whichever is greater. Intel expects to have a new revision of the P67 & H67 chipsets out around April, at which point first-run motherboards with this issue will need to be physically replaced in affected systems.

From a technical standpoint, the design issue can be bypassed fairly simply by not using the Serial ATA (SATA) ports that are affected. Your motherboard’s manual should identify your SATA ports by number, and at a minimum you should see ports 0-5 (6 ports in total) listed. Ports 0 and 1 are Sata Rev. III (6Gbps), and do not appear to be affected by this problem. Ports 2-5 are SATA Rev. II (3Gbps) and should not be used.
