...We may be tired of listening to Stephen Jones talk about building this team through the draft, but make no mistake about it, that’s exactly what they’re doing. Credit Will McClay and company for doing a remarkable job of not only finding new stars in the draft, but also collecting several reliable starters. Just look at the last four-year rookie cycle and see how many players they have drafted who have had meaningful contributions.

That’s a total of 18 players over four years. And if you include Trysten Hill and Jabril Cox, who have each missed time due to injury, that equates to 20 different draft picks the team has gotten use from. That averages out to five new players each draft. That’s remarkable!

The problem is the entire class of 2018 is entering free agency and the Cowboys will probably not retain any of them. This is the problem will building through the draft alone. By the time you draft 20 players 25% of them will leave via free agency. You never really get there. But if you draft well for 3 years and then fill holes with free agents, then you can put a championship product on the field.

and the down side of big money FA is often they are over priced and you seldom get what you hoped for. I have less of an issue with mid level FA than some do around here

The problem is when it's time to give contract extensions Dallas places the value of players high enough that they have to constantly refinance them to attempt a competitive team. They more often than not, DO NOT get any trade value for players not willing to take a team friendly deal. But, they will turn around and use draft picks to trade for players.

The Cowboys haven't really hit the mid-level FA market all that hard either. They are more bottom feeders. Some pan out, like a Kearse. Most just fail like a Nolan Carroll.

I think this group was not bad, I liked a lot of what I saw with Brett Urban and when he was in the lineup prior to getting injured Cowboys did not allow a 100 yard RB, after he was injured that changed. I like what I saw in Watkins and I like what I was seeing from Hooker. People may not like it but I think given the cap situation that Cowboys are not going on a big time shopping spree for high priced FA.

Most of our fans want us to over spend in free agency so that those same fans can complain when it doesn't work or when we hVe no Cap 2 years later

Oh there is no chance they will be active this year in FA other than bottom feeding.

and I think you can find some decent players to help fill voids and put into the rotation on defense. Primary means to get talent will still fall to the draft

This, we have not done a mid tier since Carr and he was a high tier and the boys have stayed away from the mid tier and above since.

There is nothing wrong with building your team through the draft.

The problem has been not winning in the post season.

Saw a stat that since 1996 Dallas has been favored in 9 playoff games, but they are just 4-5 in those games. Can't finish.

Many outsiders, not just Dallas fans believe they have a top ten NFL roster. The same will be true next year. Looked at schedule, Dallas will win 11 to 12 games and division. But after that, it's anyone's guess.

Hopefully they can finish and change the narrative.

Worse? Jerry wears the same blinders.

Sure, a lot of Cowboys draft picks make contributions. But contributions to what? Staying relevant? It's not winning trophies.

That picture is sad but true.

I think that is a big hurdle for this team to be able to clear and that is building confidence vs top contending teams and the only way I know to do that is by winning vs top teams in the regular season. Thinking you can and knowing you can are different things.

We spent 3rd and 4th/5th round picks on McGovern and Biadasz....

We spent a 2nd on Hill and 3rds on Gallimore and OO (because I refuse to learn his name until he is better than Malik Collins).....

Yet most people who know what they are looking at say the weaknesses on the team are interior OL and DT.

Yet we "draft so well."

Is 4th round Reggie Robinson ahead of or behind pick 44 or the 3rd round reach from last year??

Maybe "better than some" is a better way to put it.

But you still can't rely on only THAT to get you over the hump, yet they do exactly that, and never get over the hump.....and never want to attempt change, so they create some ridiculous illusion that people still buy.

I'm getting there.

It’s very hard to argue w the success on the field of this strategy

Then again, it could be an indictment on their inability to sign good veteran free agents due to their cap restraints stemming from poor contracts management.

Some of these players saw significant playing time because, quite frankly, they didn't have anyone better.

The results of these players participation over the last four seasons is not impressive, 36-29 with a 1-2 playoff record.

Now the 2018 players are eligible unrestricted free agents. You can't build anything if you don't have the cap resources to keep what you built.
