Thoughts and prayers to the Kneeland family!

When Eberflus was hired he was suppose to be this Linebacker whisper, this unit has been the worse on the entire team. There is a reason why they were forced to add help at the trade deadline:

Sanborn-handpicked by Ebeflus. He has the instincts you look for at the position, but he is too athletically challenged. He did do a much better job as a run defender and the run defense really suffered after he went down.

Murray-their big trade acquisition has been a total disaster. Possessing zero instincts for the position has him watching plays, but not reacting to them.

Clark-he is pretty much the same exact player. Both Zimmer/Ebeflus both figured this out early where he has become just a special teamer.

James-a extremely green, young rookie who was playing out of position. He is more of a true Will, run and chase backer. He is another linebacker that has limited instincts for the position. Once Sanborn went down, our run defense fell off the cliff with him and Murray. He is in his developmental stage and should get better with more reps, having Overshown back should also help.

Marist-probably the most disappointing to me, thought we were going to see a breakout season. He doesn't play many snaps, when he does, very inconsistent. Makes big plays, but gives them up with his over aggressiveness. The game needs to slow down for him.

*Wilson-he is a legitimate mike linebacker with strong instincts for the position. He should come in an solidify the position against both the run and the pass. Despite him being phased out with a new DC in Cincy, he is still a very productive player. No, not an elite starter, but a solid one who has played in many big games throughout his career.

*Overshown-we have no idea how he will look after another major knee injury. I think we all need to temper our expectations at least the rest of this season. What is most important is keeping him healthy.

Team still could use another high-end linebacker, perhaps one of those modern ones, one who can play off the ball and be used as a pass rusher. I would be very interested in adding Quincey Williams in the offseason to bolster our depth and using a high pick at the position. The defensive retool is all about getting better and more physical inside the trenches.

Definitely am curious to see how Wilson and Overshown play to end the year.
Can they be a good enough duo to bring back in 2026 and not have LB be a critical item? Or will Wilson just look washed and Overshown be a step slower?

I think someone like Saborn is an average 3rd down, run stopping guy, but just for 10-15 snaps a game, depending on the other teams personnel on the field
Murray and Clark can walk away in UFA.

James is someone to watch to see if he can take this years experience and see if he can adapt and evolve. Sort of plays the same spot Overshown does and not sure if he can be a modern day Mike.
Marist to me just plays with too much reckless abandon. Poor tackling form and while he isn't slow, he isn't that Overshown athlete that can make up for being a step slow or more reacting than attacking where he needs to be. Year 3 is 2026, time to see if he can put it together or if he's another guy we just let walk after year 4.

Think they will draft another one in day 3 depending on how the board falls.

I hate to put this pressure on Overshown and Wilson but these last 8 games will be make or break for them. The team has to figure out if linebacker is a top priority in the offseason over safety, defensive end, and cornerback. We just don’t have the draft capital to fill all 4 positions. We need Overshown/Wilson to succeed.

now they are the second worst group...saftey by far is the worst

What we are seeing with the DT position is how a segment of the defense is addressed in a meaningful way......it should be solid now.

The linebacker corp is not being addressed the same way unless 29 year old Wilson regains his 2022/2023 form.......the rest of the LBs are either inexperienced, undisciplined or often injured.

LB should be the first area addressed in the draft..

I think James is in a good situation, probably rotates with Overshown the rest of the season.

As I said, really would like to also add Quincy next yr to even add more depth to the positional group.

Agree, depending how they play down the stretch could either lessen or increase the need at linebacker.

Think it is a wait and see approach first. I am less worried about the run defense now, but still concerned about playing coverage at the position. If they continue to play a zone scheme, you need your linebackers to not only be in the right positions, but they need quick reactionary skills. Overshown coming out had questions about his zone coverage abilities. Interested to see how Wilson does in this area as well.

I see a path for James, but struggle with the future of Marist. Can they develop him to become that green dot, mike linebacker or is he just going to remain that strong-side linebacker that comes off the field in nickel situations?

Agree. Our LB corp has been underwhelming, at best. I hope to see improvement there next season.

I guess it depends on who's available but I can see us drafting a LB, CB or edge in the 1st rd.....any of those three are fine and needed.

Getting a LB like Reese or Hill is a pipe dream but if for some strange reason Caleb Downs at safety becomes available, you gotta pull the trigger on that guy.

I am hoping we actually use free agency for another impact starter on defense to go along with those picks. As for the draft, you never know who could potentially be available.

When you're counting on a recently demoted Cincinatti Bengal and a consecutive year season ending knee injured guy of your own to be your rescue plan at the 2nd level of your defense, I mean...?

With Reese, Styles and Hill - one of those 3 should be there with their 1st pick. LBs aren't traditionally top picks

This is a must......they better use free agency to pick up legit starters......no more over-the-hill players and 1st rd busts

This offense has a shelf life so the windows may be 2 to 3 years

If they really want to win in this Dak window, next two offseason's are make or break.

Thanks, it must have been brutal watching this group for the recap.

I really do not see either one of them being close to us (Reese or Downs)
