Okay, I know what you are thinking. "Hos, we don't need a primer for a bye week." Well, I am hopeful that at least someone finds this information useful. So humor me.

There will be a nice surprise at the end of the post. Okay, so maybe it's not so nice.

The bye week began in 1990. That means Tom Landry never had a season with a bye week in his 29 year career.

In 1993, there were 2 bye weeks.

The Cowboys overall are 17-4 going into a bye week.

The Cowboys overall are 15-5 coming out of a bye week.

The latest bye week the Cowboys have ever had was week 14 in 1990. Now no teams have bye weeks later than week 10.

The earliest is week 3 in 1999 and 2003.

The most common bye week for the Cowboys has been week 4 which has been their bye week 5 times. Followed closely by weeks 8 and 6, each of which has been 4 times counting this season, next week.

The Cowboys have never had a bye week in week 5.

Jimmy Johnson was 5-0 going into a bye week. 3-2 coming out of a bye week.

Barry Switzer was 3-1 going into a bye week. 4-0 coming out of a bye week.

Chan Gailey was 1-1 going into a bye week. 2-0 coming out of a bye week.

Dave Campo was 2-1 going into a bye week. 1-2 coming out of a bye week.

Bill Parcells was 4-0 going into a bye week. 3-1 coming out of a bye week.

Wade Phillips is 2-1 going into a bye week. He is 2-0 coming out of a bye week.

This year we will face Atlanta at home coming out of the bye week. We are 13-8 all time against the Falcons, 7-3 at Dallas. The last time we played the Falcons was 2006 on NFL Network. We won that game 38-28. That is the game where DeMarcus Ware picked off Mike Vick and took it to the house.

We have faced the Falcons one time coming out of a bye week. 1995 under Barry Switzer. The game was won by the Cowboys 28-13 in Atlanta. After that game Deion Sanders announced that he "built this house." He was referencing the Georgia Dome.

I hope it will be a nice relaxing off week for all of you.

Go Saints. Beat the Giants.

Go Chiefs. Beat the Commanders. :laugh2:

Go Raiders. Beat the Eagles. :bang2:

I promised a surprise at the end of the post. This is the recipe for my very own crock pot chili.

I call it Hostile's Hotter than Hell chili. It goes great on a bye week as you watch the other games and don't have to worry about the knots your stomach may be in. Warning this stuff burns twice.

I hope some of you will try it.

This one is not for sissies.
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups of pinto beans (less if you have a small crock pot)
  • 3 strips of bacon
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 habanero pepper
  • 5 jalapenos
  • 1 bell pepper
  • 5 tablespoons red chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 tablespoon jalapeno powder
  • Course ground black pepper (pepper mill recommended)
2 cups of pinto beans in the crock pot add water to about halfway up the crock pot. Cut 3 strips of bacon into inch squares and add. Cook on low overnight.

Brown the ground beef. Sprinkle a lot of black ground pepper to season the beef. I usually grind the pepper mill for about 15 to 20 seconds. Drain the oil.

Add the ground beef to the cooked beans.

Finely dice all 5 jalapeno peppers, 1 habanero pepper, 1 bell pepper, and 1 red onion. Add to the mixture along with 5 tablespoons of red chili powder, 1 tablespoon of cayenne pepper, 1 tablespoon of jalapeno powder.

Cook for 4 hours stirring every 15 minutes.

Serve with grated cheese and Fritos and lots of ice water. Woowee.

*******

Here's hoping some guys get healthy, the team works hard and stays focused. I need this bye week. The wins are worse than the losses around here. I finally don't have to worry about either. For one week anyway.

Hos, I like spicy food, but that recipe looks almost inedible to me. Must be 1 bite of chili to 1 bottle of beer.

I want to try it with ghost peppers, but I can't find anyone who sells them so far.

YES! I scooped a crock pot not too long ago and have made a few things. I remember this recipe but can't get anyone brave enough to try it. Might have to go at it.

And this bye week couldn't come at a better time. Team in disarray, little time is needed.

Hos, I love your primers. Even if it is Bye Week, they're always great reads.

Did you know that in India, they're thinking of making "ghost pepper grenades" to keep rioters at bay?

no way in hell will I ever try your chili....i cannot stand spicy food. i have a very sensitive tongue...so spicy and me dont mix. i suffer when eating the mild wings from most wing places. i am the black sheep of my family for sure when it comes to eating spicy food (or in my case, not eating it).

BTW, I do make a mean salsa....

1 white onion
2 cans of whole peeled tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic (you can add more if you like garlic)
1 generous handful of cilantro
lime - freshly squeezed (1 or 2)
3 jalapenos
3 chipotles
3 poblanos
3 serranos
3 habaneros
1 pack of chile petines
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Place all of the non-peppers in a blender.

roast the peppers on the stove in a little bit of olive oil, in the oven, or even on the grill. once they are roasted to your liking, dump the lot of them into the blender.

Blend until smooth

Poor into a sealable container and store in your fridge. It should last you at least 2-3 weeks.

btw, if you like your salsa a little sweet, as well as spicy, you can add some honey to the blender.....just add till desired sweetness is achieved.

I'm a spicy food fanatic, and that chili sounds awesome.

Problem: I'm too lazy to cook.

If anyone has a solution (*cough* cook for me) I'd love to hear it.

if u are cool with any males that cook....just set the recipe atop a 6 pack of beer.

They already use them to keep wild elephants away. I have never tried one, but I really want to.

I want to try Red Savina peppers too.
