Jerry said he was in the top 16, but the next day Stephen said that he wasn't a "true-blue" first rounder. So either he was at the low end of the first round grades or at the top end of the second round grades.
True blue , blue chipper ?

So he was number 16
Yes, it would appear that we had fewer than 16 rated as first-rounders. Gregory was one of them, though. I read somewhere today that he was either No. 5 or in the top five. So by our scouts' estimation, we at least got two players they had rated among the top 20.
I think Jerry said it in his PC after day 1 or day 2...something like that.Do you remember where you read that?

Putting Jerry and Stephen's comments together, it makes sense that they had him ranked #16 but as a 2nd rounder. That would be in line with what a lot of people said about this draft that there isn't a ton of 1st round talent.
Do you remember where you read that?
Gregory, a sure top-10 pick based on his talent, the guy considered by the Cowboys the best edge rusher in this draft and top 5 on their board overall, plummeted out of the first round.
Mickey Spagnola column:
So just swap him with Gregory who has "true blue" talent.
Gregory at 27
Jones at 60
AWESOME Value
I heard more than once that they had a few less 1st round grades this year--maybe 15-17 vs 22-24.
Also heard that Jones was right at the bottom of that final grouping--which means they'd have traded down if he was gone.
I heard the same thing. The Cowboys were sweating every pick after Putzburgh took Dupree.
