Byron Jones vs Washington Wk. 13 – Scouting Report
Byron was moved around a lot during his initial NFL season, he played outside corner, slot corner and Safety. I decided to study film of a game he played at the Safety position since it appears as though that is where the coaches want to play him moving forward.

This is good stuff. The first gif is classic Claiborne giving up too much ground in off man.

Really appreciate that. This is my first time doing this and I hope to learn and grow. I'm planning to do Randy Gregory next. I really really wanna do one on Zeke, but I feel like that's been done so much it'd be more appreciated later (like a few weeks into the season).

And yes Claiborne gives a ridiculous amount of space. At times it appears he has no interest in preventing catches but id focused more on attempting to make tackles after in order to prevent huge gains. it's maddening!

Yeah that's what I am hoping. I'm no scout or anything, but I watch the way he moves, anticipates and reacts and I am impressed. I believe the thing holding him back somewhat is the anticipation and hopefully with more experience he'll improve and that will only make his reaction time that much better. After that it's about making plays, it would be great if he could hold on for picks, but consistently batting down passes and disrupting plays would be an upgrade over what we've had.

Just think, Jones will be really good at multiple positions in about ten years. It's good to have some flex.

10 years! I hope by then he is well established at either or both positions (with a Superbowl ring or 5 lol). I hope and believe over the next 2-3 seasons we will see him become a pro bowl FS.

That was a great read and on point with his positives and things he needs to work on (run D recog, etc). Honestly didn't click initially bc I thought the "workout warrior" was meant in the negative stereotypical way. Never assume... Great post and OP

Pretty sure he is just a workout warrior.

I don't accept that.

Having said that, if Bryron Jones ends up never being a big play guy in terms of Interceptions, forced fumbles, etc I still think he can be the Cowboy's best safety in at least half a decade just based on his ability to play solid pass coverage.

I hope he is MUCH more than that, however, that athleticism is going to show up no matter what.

Thanks. Glad you commented it is a great point you make and one that I must consider next time. I may very well have scared off other readers with that Title.

My thinking exactly. I'm willing to bet he surpasses what we've gotten at the position for the last few years, but am certainly hoping for much more.

You mean another Terence Newman. Never did much in the way of turnovers, but was solid when his hamstrings held up.

Oscan @ FS wouldn't be terrible...but do expect w/Jones being over the top/calling coverages will allow him to stop thinking and reacting after the snap. This should result in more big plays from that perspective/angle of the field and build the confidence that he can be aggressive in his assignment(s) instead of covering for others as you saw him doing w/Mo.

Scandrick was hurt last year and before last year Mo was hurt every year. Further Mo plays RCB or weakside and Scandrick would either be on the other side or slot which is strongside. Not sure what you think youre seeing.

I was referencing Scan bc of his great coverage but lack of TOs. That was it (Scan CB = Jones FS, etc.). "wooosssaa" :D

Oh and just to clarify if came off pompous, the "assume" aspect was aimed at me, not you. Burden's always on the reader, etc. Good post again; quite refreshing/informative tbh.

I always looked at the term 'workout/combine warrior' as being a slight to your actual ability on the field. It's the same as people who excel in a comfortable classroom environment with very little variables or moving parts but then are not that great in the real world.

Byron leaves a lot to be desired, especially being a 1st rd pick. But we will see how he progresses over the next few seasons. We need all the help we can get in the defensive backfield.

One of the biggest mistakes we can make as fans is expecting instant gratification at a position where it is routinely highly unlikely for a rookie to provide as much. The overinflated hype that comes with extremely talented athletes like Byron must be taken with a grain of salt throughout the initial onset of their careers, otherwise dissatisfaction becomes a foregone conclusion.

The CB, slot and safety positions are well known to be some of the most demanding of those in pro football, where the speed and expertise of the vet receivers is certain to produce a problem for the vast majority of rookies operating within their team's defensive backfield.

Byron Jones has only begun to learn and absorb the intricacies of both the CB and free safety positions in pro ball. It's difficult enough learning one position and concentrating upon it during pro indoctrination without being put to the disadvantage of constantly switching back and forth from one to the other and being expected to function as though excellence is something to be taken for granted.

Hopefully, he'll be able to concentrate on manning the FS spot throughout the upcoming season, rather than being expected to distinguish himself at CB, the slot and FS as well. For one, I'm expecting far more positive development this year as a result of Byron being permitted that advantage.
