C Jordan or JJ Watt?

I think J.J. Watt is going to be over drafted. I don't think that he has the stop/start athletic skill on the football field that allows defensive linemen to follow the football fast in the NFL, and I don't think he has that great initial burst to pursue the football fast in the NFL. I think he can be a solid 34 DE, but I don't think he is going to be a true impact player in the NFL. He could be over drafted, imo. Does his workout at the combine match his tape on the field? I question that for sure.

I don't think either player is worthy of the top 10. I prefer Jordan, though. I wouldn't settle for either of them.

Two things:

Can anyone name a good or great defensive linemen from Wisconsin, who is playing in the NFL right now?

Also, who has Wisconsin produced in the NFL that is really good?

Is this guy the next Chris Long, another workout warrior at the combine?

http://blog.playmakermobile.com/blog/dave-razzano-nfl-scout-for-playmaker-mobile.html

I wish that I knew what this former scout thinks about Watt, because he stated that Chris Long was a second round pick. Long went number 2 overall.

Do you really want Chris Long at number 9 if that turns out to the case?

You don't reach for solid players who fill needs in the top 10.

That is an interesting link, because he nails a bunch of busts and nails people who were under drafted.

I forgot Joe Thomas. LOL He's one of the best offensive linemen in the NFL.

I'll give them that.

Lee Evans..Owen Daniels

However, after that...

You are going to see a bunch of super commons...players from Wisconsin playing in the NFL right now.

Memo to any person at Valley Ranch even considering drafting J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan at number 9:

:)

Why didn't you find a "poor man's" J.J. Watt in the 2009 draft? After all, you gave Andy Levitre (OG) to Buffalo and Phil Loadholt (OT) to Minnesota and gave me (gulp) Robert Brewster and Jason Williams. Did you enjoy Ray Edwards destroying Mark Colombo in the divisional playoff round? Did you enjoy Colombo's collapse in the divisional game against the Giants? Got to love three players blocking Colombo's guy (Strahan) on Romo's last effort pick at the end of the game. Forget how horrible Colombo played last year.

I know..We have Sam Young... WOW! Woooooooooooo!! 6th round gem, eh?

2009 Draft:

3. Jason Williams (69th)
3. Robert Brewster (75th)
4. Stephen McGee (101)
4. Victor Butler (110)
4. Brandon Williams (120)
5. DeAngelo Smith (143)
5. Micheal Hamlin (172)
5. Davis Buehler
6. Stephen Hodge
6. John Phillips
7. Mike Mikens
7. Manuel Johnson

12 players and 7 chosen on defense. Way to feed the offensive and defensive lines fellows . I get a QB at the very top of round 4. I get a third TE, a practice squad WR, a K, and Robert Brewster. One offensive linemen and zero defensive linemen. Was Jason Williams that important? Andy Levitre or Phil Loadholt would be starting on this offensive line.

By all means, draft J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan....at 9...

We don't need Tyron Smith. We have a new trainer for Colombo and Sam Young.

Timber.......

More on that "outstanding" 2009 draft:

After Dallas gave it's first round pick away (among other picks) and gave Roy E. Williams a mint, players like, oh, Hakeem Nicks, Clay Matthews, Kenny Britt, Micheal Oher, ect.. went off the board. But hey, we don't like drafting WRs, much less in round one...Thank goodness for Dez Bryant breaking that spell...

After Dallas traded down with Buffalo in round 2, Buffalo took starting LG Andy Levitre. He could have replaced Kyle Kosier. (See Levitre dominate the Steelers in 2010.) He's flat out nasty.

Then, Minnesota drafted RT Phil Loadholt from Oklahoma. Ouch.. Turn the card in fellows.. Turn the card in... (See above post for that great move). That was Colombo's replacement and a big upgrade. Wow. That's o.k. Loadholt can block your team while Colombo gets destroyed. Colombo was never a good enough player to pass on Loadholt to start with.

Then, N.E. drafted starting RT Sebastian Vollmer...

Again, Cowboys fans your consolation prize is Jason Williams and Robert Brewster and the rest of that putrid draft. Three starting offensive linemen turned down (in round 2) for the sake of Jason Williams and a project like Brewster. Both players were small school projects. Grade: F

After Williams and Brewster were picked in round 3, these players came off the board:

Antoine Caldwell C/G Alabama (played and started for Houston last year)

I thought he fit Dallas' profile at C. I guess not.

Louis Vasquez (started at G for the Chargers last year)

After Dallas took McGee in round 4, these players went:

Dorell Scott DT
T.J. Lang OT/OG

5 offensive linemen (who were starting on other teams last year) were turned down, so Dallas could take Jason Williams in early round 3, I guess. Jason Williams and Robert Brewster...Greetings....:)

Now, some at Valley Ranch may want to consider drafting a DE like Watt or Jordan at 9, and those two players should not be in the conversation with the number 1 or 2 OT in this draft, most likely number 1 on Dallas' board (from what I am able to gather).

Tyron Smith

The front office completely blows it on offensive linemen in that draft, and now I'm supposed to sit back and except drafting J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan at 9 and let Tyron Smith go play in Minnesota or Detroit or New York (Giants).

7 defensive players taken and not one defensive linemen and one offensive line project.

How about going out and getting me the best offensive line prospect in this draft and how about some of you finding another Chris Canty in round 3 or 4. How about that?

I'm sick of the Sam Youngs, James Martens, E.J. Whitleys, Pat McQuistans, Cory Proctors, Joe Bergers, Phil Costas, and James Brewsters of the world.

I want plug and play offensive linemen now! The time for projects has sailed and gone.

How about Cameron Heyward? Obviously in a trade down

Hayward may well be there with our 2nd rd pick. IIRC I read that he had major elbow reconstruction after the Sugar Bowl.

I like both players, though I think Watt's longterm upside is alot better. Jordan might play a little better initially, but after Watt really gets the 3-4 I think he pans out at a higher level.

I like Jordan, but I'd take Watt over him. More of a sure thing.

That's how I feel. When a player seems to have practically no negatives like Watt, they usually succeed. I've never had a "pet cat" per se, but I think Watt might be mine for this draft. I think the guy is a starter from day 1 and is a helluva player for the next 10 years.

I take Watt. Not only does he have a high motor and smart, he is very gifted physically.

The difference between the two is Jordan is a chaser, Watt is a closer.

I'm not really sure what that means...

However, before the combine Jordan was the greatest thing since sliced bread. JJ puts up numbers and the combine and now he's better. Seems like the flavor of the moment changes all the time around here. ;)

jeez after reading that breakdown of our draft, it really bothers me that we have such poor talent evaluation. its depressing.

I take either one. I like Watt's swagger, and lord knows we need an injection of alpha male swagger on this defense. One thing I like about Jordan is the way he lined up over just about every gap and every tech at Cal. He brings a lot of versatility to a defensive coordinator like Rob Ryan, who is going to ask his defensive linemen to line up in every alignment under the sun.

2009 was definitely an embarassment for our front office, coaches and scouts. The entire thing from top to bottom, including the attempted development of the players afterwards, has been an abject disaster and it WILL set our franchise back sooner or later. Maybe last year was the first signs of it, but you can't wiff on an entire draft and expect not to pay for it.

It's one of those things where it wasn't just the players taken, or where they were taken, or how they were used, the entire thing was just awful.

Heyward might be a steal at the top of the second.

trade down grab Carimi in the later rounds and then Heyward at the top of the second.

Many people claim that you need 3 or 4 years to grade a draft class. You really didn't need that for the 2009 draft class, it was obviously awful right from the outset.
