The Ed Reed comparisons are not about their rookie years. You know that and I know that. Don't waste my time being disingenuous

A weeks worth of practices, and what, 2 in pads? and he is already the 2nd coming of one of the best safeties to ever play. Only in Dallas does this crap happen. Does anyone see another article on any rookie in the entire league that is generating this kind of talk after a week of practice?

these lofty comparisons were in play before he got selected by dallas. why act as if there's no body of work, or history prior to his tenure with dallas. will he live up to it, who knows, but this isn't dallas koolaid, the entire world and draft/scout community was doing the same

This is not Dallas exclusive hype. People were already comparing him to the best safeties in the pre-draft process. Scouts likened his college impact to guys like Ed Reed and Troy Polamalu because they saw similarities in their film.

Yes it's all hyperbole because Downs hasn't played in an actual game yet. But he's living up to the standard set already in camp and he's not even close to being as good as he's going to be yet.

It's okay to feel good about a player the Cowboys draft. Really, it is.

As an Ohio State fan, I'll again say that Downs is on another level. It was him that drove the defense. He doesn't play like Lott or Reed. Polomolu is probably the closest comparison because he plays all over and just has a preternatural ability to sniff out a play. He obviously does a ton of film work and is good at implementing it in real time. He is a fast processor.

He isn't going to wow people with size or speed. He just thinks and reacts faster than anyone on the field.

they're also not about him currently being peak ed reed. every player has comps and projections, he's a blue chipper and there's like 8 -10 historical safeties people get compared to. i don't see the problem. he either will be or wont be. assuming you think wont? or just reserving judgement?

No one thinks Caleb Downs, in his rookie year, will be what Ed Reed was in his prime year.
Thats just ridiculous.

What most think is that he CAN be what Ed Reed was in his prime. Could be next year, maybe the year after.

Reed was good, very good. But please his folklore like standing is a bit much. Being in Baltimore and watching him he was a product of Sportscenter, they hardly showed where he guessed wrong but always when he guessed right.

One of my fav Training Camp tid bits about Downs was on media day he disappeared. They found him in the film room studying.

The bar being set for Downs is HOF high and that is a lot to live up to.

No matter how people want to feel about Reed, Lott, or Polamalu as players (freelancers, selfish player, made a ton of poor guesses, etc ) they are all in the HOF and widely considered the best to play the safety position. Their gold jackets say all that needs to be said. Each are SB champions as well.

I loved Downs at Alabama and Ohio St. I loved the pick at 11 and believe he is an amazing player/special player. I hope he is close to as good, just as good, or better than the HOF players at safety we all keep mentioning.

Put in the right positions by coaches and surrounded by good talent by his front office and the sky is the limit for him as a player. Excited to see how he develops as a professional.

He isn't the poor man's version at all. He was the #11 pick overall and we traded two 5ths to move up for him. Ed Reed was the 24th pick overall. He's more expensive than Ed Reed, lets hope he can play like it.

Downs does. Plus he excelled consistently against some of the best talent in college. And he gets rave reviews from those that coached him, played with him, against him and scouted him. On top of that he seems to genuinely love playing football.

Downs is no Mazi. Hes also no Ed Reed...yet!

Yeah but Mazi isn’t the only flop. I mean even Jadaveon Clowney is as a bust. He’s had a solid career but he was destined to be a great. Or so they said. There’s been a lot of top 10 picks who fit that mold.
