The OL made a mistake. It happens. That's why they watch film after the game. The defense tries to fool the offense and the offense has to figure it out. They didn't this time. But on a play like that with a free blitzer there should be some kind of outlet pass and the QB should take that throw. Great QBs see that stuff and do not hesitate to take the dump off throw. This is what made Brady so great. Dak never looked anywhere but at CeeDee. Zeke was open underneath for close to a 10 yard gain. Dak never looked at him.

Also, if you look at #31 who is blitzing. He tips off the blitz before the ball is snapped. Dak has to be more aware of that.

On the next play with Kittle catching and bobbling the ball I have two thoughts. First why is Gallimore covering the TE? That should never happen unless the TE has a broken leg. Second, how does Kittle bobble that ball for what seems like 10 minutes and no one else is around him to knock it away? Something was wrong with the coverage on that play and that is a mental mistake which should not be made in playoff games. The Cowboys made too many mental mistakes. Kittle is one of their primary weapons and he should never be alone and never covered by a big slow DT.

  • Simply a beautiful play design by SF
    • Overload the right side, those guys bail out into coverage.
    • The man over Martin loops around, and from the pre snap look it would make sense that the Oline was man locking and not zone
    • Total guess here, but I would assume if we go back and watch tape of the Cowboys in empty sets throughout the year they probably play mostly man 2 man blocking. This feels like a play SF had drawn up all week and pulled it out of the bag on a perfect 3rd and medium play where they got the look they wanted.
    • From a defensive standpoint this play is just a work of art that few teams can actually pull off, especially when you have a middle backer on the LOS bail out and keep up in the middle of the field with a WR running right up the seam.
  • From a QB perspective I really struggle to break down what exactly is happening here so I have more observation than any real break down
    • One of the biggest issues Dak has is he locks on receivers at times, and he did that here
    • Feels like a poor read and decision by Dak, but at the same time if Dak did read that 100% perfectly pre snap and knew that he had Lamb v Warner would anyone blame him for being locked on to that matchup? At the same time though if Dak had a good read on things pre snap no way we see that protection called. It leaves me open to the idea that Dak made a good read and SF just made a better play, but I also doubt that.
    • I'll give Dak a pass on TY running free. It's his back side, two guys showing blitz just bailed out of that side, I can understand missing that one. What I don't understand is why do you not look at the wide open Zeke? The entire reason you have him underneath there has to be in case of this exact situation. IDK if he gets the first down or not, but you should have at worst a 4th and 1 scenario on the next play.

This sounds like a good explanation of what happened.

There are free rushers because Dak was confused pre-snap and call the wrong protection.
What kind of protection calls for 3 O-lineman to block one guy? Its on the O-line to be more aware.

We only see the tell signs of the safety blitz because we know it actually happens.

I think it's a standard read on a db blitz to throw where the db was vacating. But the LB closed on Lamb quickly and Lamb wasn't looking back to get the ball earlier.

I wonder about Lamb's responsibility to make a read here. He's sees his man blitzing, shouldn't he have quicker developing route to fall back on?

As you say, it's hard to fault Dak for taking a LB on Lamb matchup.

9:00 mark what do you see in the play?

If Warner doesn't make a spectacular play for a LBer, CD scores easily. The CB who was supposed to cover CD blitzed and Warner who was faking the blitz back out soon at the ball was snapped and ran to cover CD. Zach Martin failed to see the blitz. It was risky but that was by design. I'm no expert but that's what I'm seeing.

This definitely falls on the Oline. Great designed play by the 49ers. The LB standing over Biadasz at the line of scrimmage faked a blitz up the middle while falling back into coverage. All while the DT over Zack Martin ran towards and across Martin towards Biadasz, causing a double team between Zack Martin and Tyler Biadasz, thus creating a wide open blitzing lane to Martin's right side which the split second delayed blitz by the slot DB rushed through and got to Dak within a split second after the ball was hiked. It didn't give Dak any time to progress his view from CeeDee (first read) to the wide open TY Hilton (second read) streaking down wide open along the left side numbers. Had Dak been given a few more seconds of pass protection, he would have had enough time to notice and throw to a wide open TY Hilton for what would have been an easy TD. This is one example of many where our Oline got tricked and beat last season (and previous several seasons as well), thus why Oline Coach Joe Philbin was rightfully finally fired as soon as last season ended. One of many screw ups I personally asked for Philbin to be fired. So many of Dak's critics blamed him as not being able to read coverages or miss throwing the ball to the open receiver, but they fail to realize Dak not having the time to go through his progressions in order to find the open receiver.

Several people failed to adjust including Dak.
But more importantly explainwhy Dak threw the 2 passes that were picked? He had nothing there.
Explain how you have CeeDee streaking down the sidelines, 5 yds on the corner, easy 6 and you grossly underthrow him?
Defending him is pointless, better QB, we win, 2 years in a row.

Support the team, not the player.

Looks like Gallimore was just hustling after seeing Kittle release uncovered. There's no way Quinn would call a defense that would leave Gallimore trying to keep up with Kittle or Juszchek for that matter.

Why were 3 olineman including the great zach Martin blocking 1 guy? I like to ask questions. I really don't know. Was Dak supposed to know that exotic blitz san Fran did or what? It wasn't a talent issue on that play
This happens a lot, usually when a OL has no one in front of him so they help the guy to the left usually.
Just poor scheme, assignments, knowing what to do.
this could be a read blitz, the guy sees the gap and goes. once he is going the ol guy cant move fast enough to get to blitzer.

This is a blown blocking coverage call. Whoever makes the call on the offensive line blew the call. I won't dive into Ace, Deuce, and Trey calls on the line, but whoever makes the line call had to identify the blitzer about to attack the right side. This wasn't even a delayed blitz, as the player jumps toward the line a split second before the snap is made. This separates a center like Jason Kelce apart from so many others. He makes those calls for the Eagles.

This also falls on Dak a bit, since the QB has to recognize that if a blitzer is set to attack and the line call was wrong, the QB must call out and adjust the blocking scheme. Brady and Manning were absolute masters at this.

Simply put, lots of people are blaming Zack, but if he was blocking to a pre-called scheme, the person who called the scheme and the person who failed to adjust the scheme are most at fault. We are spoiled because Zack, about 99% of the time, makes the adjustment on his own.
