Can Hamlin play strong safety?

If he could that could solve our safety problem, let Watkins play FS. Or if they get the PacMan and draft a high corner, then you could let Henry move to safety. Several corners have moved to safety towards the end of their career. Make Roy a situational player if he refuses to improve and lay off the biscuits.

So you're assuming that Wadkins, who was not a starter for Dallas last year, is a better FS than Roy Williams, who went to the probowl, is a SS....I can't say I agree with that.

I'm not a big Roy fan...as a matter of fact, I got sick of his sissy ankle diving tackles on RB's that started a few years ago...he'll crush a helpless WR if he gets the chance, but let a RB run up his face and lower a shoulder, and you always see Roy kissing the turf.

However, Roy is still one of the top two safeties on this team, and I seriously doubt we'll see him replaced this year.

This is an original question and proposal. Let me do some research and get back to you. ;)

 @ the bolded part.

I think Roy will, and should, be the starter again this year. I think he's going to need to improve his play, or he's gone after that though.

It is reasonable to think that, in view of recent trends in the NFL, Hamlin may be a better fit at SS than Williams. He's a solid tackler with some big-hitter ability, and has the coverage skills that modern SS's seem to require.
Roy is a victim of a changing game IMO...and the recent trends doesn't suit his skillset.

The wild card here is Watkins. He's shown flashes of ability. If he can man the FS position next year, and we can find a backup SS somewhere, I think that this lineup could be successful.

SS: Hamlin > Draft pick (Zbikowski, Barber?)

FS: Watkins > Brown

Roy is an asset still. Overall play.
I agree. I think by year's end redemption is a word many will think of about him.

I think something that we should consider here is the possibility that we draft Kenny Phillips at 28. Say we do whatever at 22 (please not felix...please not felix) and then Kenny is sitting there at 28, which looks to be quite possible. So we have Pacman, Henry, and TNew. (We are going to need a safety, b/c we will be cutting Roy after this yr and prob can re-sign Hamlin.)

But as far as this yr, Yes, I absolutely think he can. In fact, if you will remember when we signed him, the reason why some people didnt like it was b/c in Sea, he was known as more of a hard hitting SS type player, and of course, many thought that we needed a true centerfielder type of coverage specialist safety to pair with he-who-must-not-be-named.

Now we have seen him for a year, and my conclusion is yes...he absolutely could play SS, and ANYTHING out of our SS position would be a added bonus, b/c we get nothing out of it rt now. So then Kenny could slide into the FS spot.

This prob wouldnt happen as an announced type major thing though. Roy Wily is gonna be the "starter", at least at the beginning of the yr, and the game, but more and more I think you will see what you are proposing. Heck, last yr Wade wisely removed RoyBoy from the hashmarks in obvous passing downs.

You are going to get railed on this site by some who see Roy as the second coming, but fortunaley, Wade and Jerry have seen the light. They know what Roy is/has become, and that is a MAJOR liablility, and what you have proposed may well happen with A Henry moving into FS, our drafted CB into 3rd CB, or the other phillips scenario with pacman as 3rd CB.

I think this idea could work. I've always thought of Hamlin more as a SS. Watkins is entering his third season and now we should be able to see what he is made of. He played well last season even though he missed some games with an injury. I don't know if he will start, but I love the idea of moving Hamlin to SS, Watkins to FS and Williams to the bench in passing situations.

I think Hamlin could play SS to me he is more of a SS than a FS, it's just when you play with Roy Williams your going to look like Ed Reed playing next to Roy.

I think they draft a safety regardless of what they do with Hamlin or Roy.

I think Hamlin plays out his franchise tender and they let him walk next year.
Due to all the pending extensions and the rising cost of doing business, I think he walks.

They might. I was really surprised at how high they had Kenny Phillips on their DB board.

Sadly, you may be right. I'm not a big fan of any of the FS types in this draft though. There are a few mid-late round guys I'd like to look at, but I don't see them as starting material for another year or two...mostly special teams help. If we can't afford to resign Hamlin next year, which is a strong possibility, I think we're going to find ourselves in the same situation we were whining about two years ago.

I am a big Roy supporter but a future combination of Phillips and Hamlin would be lethal. I could see them drafting Phillips and playing him more on passing situations given Roy another year to see if he can put it together. If he can't, we sign Hamlin to a long term deal. If he does, we let Hamlin go next year.

They shoudl get Tyrell Johnson and give Roy one more year to work his kinks out. Let johnson get int he VR weight program and learn the system while he acts as a ST dynamo in the meantime.

if Roy fails then he can step in and if not then we have one heck of a reserve safety and ST ace.

Actually, I am assuming that Hamlin is a better SS than Roy. If he cant handle the coverage responsibilities of SS, then I definitely dont want Roy playing FS. Henry might be an option as well.

Wrestlemania is coming on ..... I will argue the stupidity of benching our best Strong Safety tomorrow.

Good. I will argue the stupidity of watching Wrestlemania or worst yet paying to see it.
