Can Johnson get any stronger?

the way he has been abused this season so far, getting shoved back into Drew and JJ on several occasions, can he overcome it? Or has he gone as far as he can? If so, and BP thinks that GUrode cannot play full time without making too many mistakes, does this mean we are looking for another center?
Last year it did not seem like AJ was getting pushed around like that.

He has been in the strentgh program for 2 full years so I think he is what he is... an undersized NFL center.

Do yourself a favor download the game highlites and watch them while paying close attention to Al Johnson # 52.

Since he wasn't and hasn't been abused perhaps you can use your investigative skills on something that really needs attention....

He needs to get alot STRONGER because his *** is in the backfield just as much as JJ. He gets pushed around regularly lately and it's got to show up in film study.

I don't know how anyone cannot see that He Is Getting Pushed Around.
Some people are in denial- which ain't just a river in Egypt.

Well I've watched every game tape multiple times this year and I haven't see it so perhaps you can point them out. He's given ground on a few plays but none have had a impact on the plays effectiveness since he took his man out of the play.

There have been times that he has been having problems with the bigger nose guards. There was a third and short in particular that he got blown up by the DT is the SF game.

I haven't looked into this at all, but going back a step an moving your guy to the right gives the RB going Left a cutback lane.

He did get pushed around in SD, but I don't remember seeing it against Wash or San Fran. As someone pointed out, he's an undersized but smart player. Also, thankfully we have someone that can come off the bench (Gurode) against the larger DT's and provide some depth.

Move along, there are many other aspects of this team to focus on.

He was abused by SD's big NT early on- and against SF he was shoved back at least twice into Drew once and JJ had to dodge him on one other occasion. This has been remarked upon by more then a few.

He's been struggling lately. I can't point out in particular which plays but they stick out when I see them. Saw it several times against the 49er's. Don't get me wrong, I like Johnson but the center has to be a rock, strong and sturdy. If andre could think better, the job would be his. BP was trying his best to to get him PT but he keeps screwing up(mental errors).

I agree that Gurode is physically better suited, but AJ plays smart and deserves to be starting. But, at some point I would hope that Gurode gets it together and takes over.

Hey people still talk about the gunman on the "grassy knoll" but that doesn't make it true. The fact is Johnson played the entire game against 2 of the strongest nose tackles going in San Francisco and held his own very well this is AdamJT13's breakdown of the game

I just watched every running play again. By my count, Johnson had a total of three negative plays out of 29 running plays.

There was one play when he slipped the nose tackle and tried to block the linebacker, but the linebacker used a swim move to get around him and stop Julius for a 1-yard gain. But there also was one play where he slipped the nose tackle, went out and blocked the linebacker, shoving him 6 yards back after contact (10 yards off the line of scrimmage), helping Julius pick up 13 yards.

One of the two other negative plays was the one when Johnson's foot got tangled up with Bledsoe's foot (it looked like Bledsoe might have stepped on Johnson's foot or ankle), and Bledsoe fell down as he handed off to Julius. When Johnson's foot got tangled up (or stepped on), his upper body got turned, allowing Adams to move them both along the line to the offense's right as the play got strung out. There were about four other 49ers who didn't get blocked, and Adams tackled Julius for a 1-yard loss.

The other one was when Adams got leverage under Johnson and pushed him about a yard back, Julius almost ran into Johnson's back, then got tackled by Bryant Young for no gain. The play-by-play credited Adams with the tackle, but it didn't look like he touched him.

There were a number of running plays where he took Adams or Sopoaga way out of the play, and he helped pave the way on four short-yardage conversions up the middle -- Julius' 4-yard run on fourth-and-1, Julius' 4-yard run on second-and-2, Polite's 2-yard run on third-and-1 and Julius' first touchdown run.

Was he perfect? no, was he effective? yes very effective. There is no way Al Johnson is getting manhandled and anyone who studies the gamefilm knows that.......

There was no such play in the San Francisco game.

I reviewed every running play to see how Johnson did. Out of 29 plays, there were only three where Johnson had a negative play. And he got pushed backward by the nose tackle on only one of those (that was a second down). On the very next play, he pushed the nose tackle out of the way, clearing the way for Polite to convert on third-and-1 right behind him. Johnson had key blocks on three other short-yardage conversions right up the middle by Julius: a 4-yard run on fourth-and-1, a 4-yard run on second-and-2 and his first touchdown run.

Johnson's other two negative plays were the one when Bledsoe stepped on Johnson's foot and fell down as he handed off and the one when Johnson slipped the nose tackle and went out to block the linebacker but missed. On the one when Bledsoe stepped on Johnson's foot, Johnson wasn't able to get in position to stay square against the nose tackle, his upper body got turned and they both went down the line as the play got strung out.

The SD game did not bother me since they had a real monster NT and he is going to push any center in the NFL back man to man. BUT during the Washington game there were occassions when he was not getting a push at all; and during the SF the same thing happened. Is it his footwork or is he off balance or is it strength. This did not happen last year.

I saw the play you are thinking of, I believe. It was a short yardage play that Al got stood up on. It basically prevented the cut back.

There is a guy at UNM who may be there in a later round. His name is Ryan Cook He played his HS football here at Cibola and I've watched him at UNM. He's a bit tall at 6-6 but he has some talent. As I said, he goes about 6-6, 330. He's a two time all conference pick at Center heading into his senior year. This kid has exceptionally good feet. He's also quick for his size. I think he could stand to get a little stronger but he's got the frame and he's got a pretty good work ethic. He can also play RT. He may even be able to project to LT. He has the size, balance and footwork for it. I think this kid could be a real find for someone. It will be interesting to watch him this year.

Every center in the league gets their butt kicked by Jamal Williams. He's a beast. Wait until the end of the year and see how Johnson did against him compared to other centers. Johnson will grade out pretty well.

Al Johnson is now getting all the reps. Gurode on the bench - mental errors.

Al Johnson is bigger than All Pro Mawai

Thanks Adam for setting the facts straight here.
