Can someone please answer me why Hayden is in on passing downs?

maybe because McClain wasn't there for game 1? we'll see this week...

Plus missing two DE's in Lawrence and Spencer, guys that could typically move inside on passing downs couldn't.

One other factor would be that Melton didn't play a lot of snaps in the 1st game, forcing Coleman to play more at the #3.

As Melton moves up to 40 snaps per game, Coleman could see a little time at the other DT spot on passing downs.

I'm assuming its more of a lack of Melton/McClain issue, but sometimes against mobile QBs teams will go with a slower rusher. You're 3 tech shoots the gap and tries to get up field as quick as possible, while your 1 plays more conservative and tries to take away the QBs ability to step up in the pocket and take off. Don't know if that's what the Cowboys were doing, but its a possibility.

Because we have no talent at the position.

Why is he even on the team? The same reason.

I don't like Hayden at all but he wasn't a sore spot against the 49ers. When everyone is healthy he will be a veteran on the bench who doesn't get hurt and understands his job.

True. He wasn't the sore spot vs. the Niners.

Crawford on the other hand...

The one big run that the Cowboys gave up was on Hayden (and Church being held).

Is always in on passing downs. Why oh WHY?!

I trust Rod Marinelli......the man knows what he is doing.....He puts the best players he can on the field ...and does the best with what he has got....if that is Hayden, McClain or any other ...... there is not enough talent on the D to worry about why Hayden is on the field......

I don't think it was always, but it is odd anytime he is in on the Nickel defense.

On most snaps Hayden was paired with Coleman and Bishop was paired with Melton.

I would expect the Nickel DTs to eventually be Melton, Coleman and McClain; although, McClain said he thought playing more on run downs initially would put less stress on his ankle.

If they even get both Spencer and Lawrence back, then Mincey will likely get some snaps at DT in the Nickel. He has done this extensively in the past and might actually be a better Nickel DT than DE.

The big question with McClain returning is how they handle the 46 man game-day roster. Do they carry 5 DTs with McClain, Melton, Coleman, Bishop and Hayden?

Coleman and Bishop appear to get better with every game they play starting with the 1st preseason game. IMO, Bishop is already as good as Hayden and maybe better. He's still working on technique and situational awareness, but he looks both stronger and quicker than Hayden.

If McClain and Melton get back to 100% health-wise, I would just move on from Hayden, but Marinelli seems to love his Golden Cock.

Back to the roster issues, I still don't understand not keeping Spencer on the PUP. It's week 2 and he has not practiced. He only had to miss 6 weeks if he stayed on the PUP.

When the Cowboys eventually rebuild the DL to an even average NFL level, Hayden won't be on the team. He's a scrub with no upside.

What's sad is that no one on this roster has come close to pushing him out of the starting role.

If you read some around here, he would be off the team were it not for one darn high ankle sprain.

Complete fantasy, but there you go.

You have to give it to him about being healthy ... The others simply can't stay healthy .. LOL

Because Jerry couldn't lure Mean Joe Green or Bob Lilly out of retirement. That or that's all they had.
