Can Terrance Williams Become A Star?

My thoughts on Terrance Williams have mostly been lukewarm. I "liked" the player coming out of Baylor and I "liked" him as a rookie for Dallas. In my mind, I've always thought of his as a very solid, unspectacular wide receiver who will always play second fiddle in the NFL.

And then Williams started to get some buzz from a few writers who went back and watched some of his games. Here is an example of that:

This was just one comment, among many, that had me questioning what I thought of Williams' long term potential. So I wanted to look into Williams statistically a little more to see where he really stands.

So let's play a game to get this started. Below is a chart of four receivers. One of them is Terrance Williams. Can you guess which one is him? Who are the other three receivers listed? I will give you a hint: the three others were at the 2013 NFL Pro Bowl:

That said, I've been looking for something interesting to look into this offseason. Been watching a lot of WR film, Seattle defense film, Nick Foles film, etc. I've really wanted to find something interesting to take a peak at and I think you've given me a nice project.

Thanks @NeonDeion21

He does not need to be a star, IMO. He was really good as rookie with a few hiccups. He just needs to be a little better to be a quality #2 WR.

Where did you get his forty time. It does not match up to what I see listed.

Don't know what classifies as a star, but I'm not really concerned with whether he becomes one or not. It's not tied to winning or losing games in any way, but I've always liked the player.

He will never have dez type skill. But he can be a reliable #2. Love him in that role.

I think Williams has the potential to be a star, he had a fine rookie season and should show improvement and consistency in his play.

OK. Those 2 sites usually match.

From Walter Football:
Official: 4.52
Unofficial: 4.46

Ten: 1.52

Good. I like to double check to make sure that my measurements match up.

But back to your original point, I agree that he doesn't "have" to be a star in order for the Cowboys to be successful. But maybe they don't need to draft a WR as high as I may have thought prior. If Dez did go down for any time, I don't think the team could survive a few games with Williams as their #1.

The NFL is a passing league. You can't have to many talented WRs and they Cowboys don't really have a true 3rd outside type guy.

I like Williams, don't know if he will or not but 40 times and split times mean nothing to me. If those mattered, Vernon Golston and Mike Maulma would be in the HOF.

Well that, and it's clear to me that Williams is faster than Dez, despite having identical 40 times. And Josh Gordon has better than 4.5 speed also. Probably low, low 4.4 guy.

So far he's been very good, lot of flash in the pan right now, even some chunky flakes...

I personally really like Williams. I think he is a big time playmaker in the making. If they are able to keep him and Dez together for a long time I think we're going to have a very productive WR duo here in Dallas the whole time they're here.

Dez is the star, the man, obviously but I definately think Williams is going to be a damn fine #2 WR who makes plays on the other side of Dez.

the jury is out, but a lot of good posters here are seeing something, so im not going to say til something is known, I will say this, he has the skill set to be part of the whole package, the rest is up to him mentally.

a #2 WR doesn't have to be a superstar, he just has to be reliable. He has to be able to get open. He has to be able to catch the ball. He has to be able to BLOCK. Being a #2 WR takes some pressure off of having to carry the load...he can succeed if he's reliable.
