Barber's stats as a "workhorse"
01. 2 yards
02. 3 yards
03. 5 yards (His best of the half)
04. -2 yards
05. 3 yards
06. 3 yards
07. -1 yard
08. 2 yards
09. 4 yards
10. -1 yard

Write that in stone.

I'm beginning to think we will not resign Barber. Out of these 4, he's the easiest to replace. I wouldn't be surprised if at pick #22, we take Stewart. I know we need a corner and I think we can still get a solid one at #28 in Cason/Porter/Flowers, but I only see 3 RB's able to carry the load full-time (DMAC,Mendenhall,Stewart). Only 50 days till we find out.

Dont worry, Jerry knows the owners are opting out and the days of the cap are soon to be gone.

Havent you noticed almost all the contracts Jerry is doing have low cap numbers for the next 2 seasons and then dramatically increase. That is becasue 2008 and 2009 are the last years of the cap, 2010 is uncapped and the genie is not going back into the bottle, if you know what I mean.

Jerry knows cap will be gone in 2010 and that is when he starts passing out gold bars. :D

Almost all contracts are structured this way. Less money early, more late.

He'd be a fool not to project things being uncapped, but I don't think he's a spendthrift who will just start handing out money foolishly once it happens.

I remember his comments after the 2005 spending spree with Ferguson, Henry and Rivera. It truly hurt him to sign those checks. He will always go after the top talent heavy and hard. He's just not going to spend indiscriminately on things that are not "sure".

Freeney money has a better chance of payoff than Samuel money.

In case nobody noticed, Nate Clements didn't make the 49ers defense and Newman doesn't make ours.

Newman's a far better CB than Clements though, and he is a big part of our defense...he basically eliminates whoever he covers, and he rarely gives up a TD or a big play

Ware and Newman will both be here long term...I doubt either plays for another team

Again, if keeping our best defensive player means saying goodbye to Terrence Newman, so be it.

All of this "eliminating whoever he covers" didn't help before Ware, who is our first true pass rusher since Charles Haley.

Ware is as important to our D as Romo is to the offense. He is the one must sign. The others we could have contingency plans. Canty, Barber and even Newman can be replaced. Ware cannot.

If it came down to those player and only two can stay I say Barberian for sure and WARE..Those are no brainers for me. See ya later Newman an Canty.

Although that would suck..

Absolutely.

If keeping Ware means losing Newman, it won't even take a second for me to cast my vote to keep our best defensive player.

I agree, Ware is a super special player that doesn't come along often... Ware is the best player on the team period. Jerry will give him the ship, don't worry about that!

I think Ware is the big priority.

Given how much zone we played last year, I would question the need for maintaining a top-notch man-to-man corner in the defensive scheme meaning TNew is expendable.

I think we can also look a bit at the Colts blueprint with their megastars. They kept their QB, WRs, and pass rusher but let their RB walk because RBs are easily replaceable. If someone wants to give us a top-15 pick for Barber, I would take it and draft his replacement this year.

Canty can also be fairly easily replaced but would sign him to an extension for Ratliff type money if he would take it.

Isn't '09 or '10 the beginning of the UN-capped years?

2 years from now, we won't even be having this conversation.

Out of those four I'd imagine we'll wind up losing Barber and Canty if we were to lose any of them.

Part of this will be eased once Roy Williams and Henry are off our books. I would imagine those two won't be around much longer, another year or 2 at most for Henry and unless Roy REALLY turns around this season he'll be gone next offseason.

Plus we'll have a little more money, even on this cap, once we get Hamlin resigned so his cap hit isn't a 4.5 but more like a 2 something.

This team seems to be having cap problems, again.

Which shows you know as much about the salary cap as you do the definition of cover 2 and blue chipper.

***??? Newman can be easily replaced? obviously you guys never played a game of Football in your life, do you know how hard it is to find a guy, who will stick to a guy on every cut like a magnet?

not saying pass rushing is easy, but being the guy who determines whether or not that big play WR who scores TD's , is fast as hell and big, is a hard task

out of all the 100's of corners in the league there are only about 9 or 10 present who can completely stick with a WR consistently

out of the 100 Pass rushers, and consistent pure LB's, there about 20-25+ in the league...

come on, Ware is a rare species, but Newman is an almost extinct 1, if we can leave him alone on any WR(maybe besides moss) and double the other thats a huge help, Ware isnt going to have monster games all the time...

But Newman you can bet, 14 out of 16 games, he will take his WR out of the game, 9-10 out of 16 games, ware will be consistent

If you are saying we have to pick one and only one, the decision is obvious and I agree with you. Ware is probably the best defensive player in the league and got robbed for DPOY this yr.

I just think they'll find a way to keep both. Newman doesnt make as many picks as people would like, but then again he doesnt get thrown out anywhere near as much either, and as I said before he basically erases whoever he covers...I cant remember the last time he got beat deep and he's probabvly given up 2 or 3 tds in the last three seasons combined...there's not a CB in the league that compares to that

No way...Ware is the best defender on this team. Without His pass rush say goodbye to newman sticking to his man. Teams can win with average secondaries, no team can win without a great pass rush.

WARE is the key to the defense...Hopefully spencer develops into another great player and replaces Ellis.

In 2003 as a Rookie, and for the last part of 2004 after his knee got better, TNew was taking his guy out of the game WITHOUT a pass rush.
