Can We Now Say It Was Jimmy Johnson?

The Jones's have had three decades to make it far into the playoffs and win a 6th SB. They have failed at every turn. Cowboys fans had to wait 15 years between Coach Landry and HC Johnson to return to SB glory. I thought that was absurd, but now?

It's time to face the facts, the Jones's don't know how to win a SB. It was always Jimmy Johnson and until the Jones's admit that and change their ways, the Cowboys will always be "what was."

Sad but true. If we are ever going to make it beyond one and done, the Joneses have to be out of the picture because they have no clue as to what it takes to get us further. Jerry Barnum and Stephen Bailey (Of Barnum and Bailey Circus) have already shown us this...

Please, they've been the Beverly hillbillies for 30 years.
But I'll never get over Steven saying something to the effect of you're just fans. We're football people, ha ha ha.

Always!

You certainly can say that, but not without giving Jerry credit for 1) hiring Jimmy and doing something no owner I know of has ever done….give a college coach with no NFL experience that level of control; 2) make billionaires and millionaires of so many owners, coaches, and players because of the brilliant marketing changes he brought to the league. Jerry is not in the HOF because of those SBs.

And frankly, I’m sure Jimmy would even say that some of what happened was luck, as it always is. His first OC wasn’t very good, and he got lucky in getting the guy whose offense matched Aikman’s skills. He got lucky with many draft picks including Emmitt Smith who wasn’t even his first choice. It was the perfect storm of everything coming together, and the Walker trade gave Jimmy enough ammo to hit on a few key picks. Go back and look at how many bad picks were made. Jimmy threw enough darts to hit. You definitely do not see many coaches in the NFL who don’t actually coach any particular position or game plan on offense or defense. Jimmy was a great coach who also had a lot of luck. He did not get as lucky in Miami.

Exactly. Some people, both Cowboys fans and non-Cowboys observers, have said the same thing for decades.

Perhaps the OP is stating there should not be any further 'it was Jimmy and Jerry' counterarguments made by those who disagree. Not only did Jimmy Johnson's coaching philosophy and roster insight get the job done twice it five season. It lasted long enough after his departure to net a third Super Bowl in seven years.

'Jimmy couldn't do it in Miami' has been another recited counterargument made to validate Jerry Jones' contributions to three Super Bowl victories. Of course, Johnson retired after coaching the Dolphins for four seasons and no single team wins Super Bowls every year (not even New England's top NFL dynasty during this period accomplished that feat). Yet some will never stop trying to vindicate Jones' decades long trial-and-erroring that has lasted almost TEN times as long as what Johnson attempted after leaving the Cowboys.

The only people who dispute the fact it was all Jimmy haven't read much about the inner workings of the team during that era. There are books on the subject written by people who were there.

Jimmy himself has changed his tune a bit as he has softened with age. He now calls Jerry gracious for giving him the opportunity to coach the team which remains one of the few good decisions Jerry has made since 1989 in regard to football. People like to forget that it was Jerry's insistence on becoming involved in roster decisions that began the fraying of the relationship. Jimmy tolerated no BS at the time, and he knew Jerry wasn't qualified to tell him anything about football. Jimmy's opinion on Jerry's football acumen has never rung more true than today.

Jimmy deserves a lot of the credit but he was no magician, he failed miserably in Miami, Dallas was a case of lightning in a bottle. A lot of what Jimmy did was contrary to how teams normally did stuff I would say the odds were higher that what he did would have set the team back decades if even a handful of things did not pan out.

“Failed miserably” is a bit harsh considering the roster he left to Wannstedt.

Drafted Madison, Surtain, Taylor, Thomas, etc, and not with premium picks.

The problem was iconic Marino was cooked but didn’t want to quit yet, and he was going out on his own terms. Jay Fiedler was the best they could do thereafter. You see what happens in the NFL without a QB.

Aikman was in his lap when he got to Dallas, but there’s no reason to trash the job Johnson did in order to defend a piece of crap adulterer and dictator like Jerry Jones who thinks he is better than everyone despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary

This is pretty much what most people think for over 20 years now.
