Can we please have no "This is a must-win game" threads before November?

Hyperbole gets very old, very quickly.

I'm sure there are many other Cowboys fans out there who are tired of posters proclaiming every single game from Week 1 through Week 17 as a "must-win." It really saps the term "must-win" of its meaning and just creates a certain "crying wolf" effect after a while.

The logic of many Cowboys fans goes something like this:

  1. Game 1 is a "must-win," because it starts the season off on the right foot.
  2. Game 2 is a "must-win," because it continues the momentum of Game 1, or corrects the course from a Game 1 loss.
  3. Game 3 is a "must-win," because it keeps the momentum going, or corrects the course from a defeat the week prior.
  4. Ditto for Games 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.
  5. Game 13 is a "must-win," because now the Cowboys are likely in the month of December, and December is THE crucial stretch of the season.
  6. Game 14 is a "must-win," because now the Cowboys are in the month of December, and December is THE crucial stretch of the season.
  7. Game 15 is a "must-win," because now the Cowboys are in the month of December, and December is THE crucial stretch of the season.
  8. Game 16 is a "must-win," because, well, it's the last game of the season.

And so forth, and so forth, each and every season.

So, just as an agreement on this forum, can we have no threads proclaiming, "This upcoming game is a must-win game" until November (or unless the Cowboys are having such a terrible season that their very playoff hopes are already in serious jeopardy as soon as October?)

There's only 16 games in the regular season so every game is a must win so I agree.

46 out of 47 Super Bowl champions to date lost at least one regular-season game but still won their championship title, so I disagree.

If I'm a coach, I'm not going to count on other teams losing. I'm going to tell my players that this weeks game is a must win. Every week.

Except that this is a message board for football fans. Starting threads telling fans that each game is a "must-win" isn't going to affect the players or coaches one bit.

Your comment is precisely the kind of over-dramatic hyperbole I'm referring to.

By your logic, the Baltimore Ravens team that went 10-6 last year and won the Super Bowl lost six games that were "must-wins."

They won 10 and did good? so my question is this, how many were they SUPPOSED TO LOSE?

Do you plan on losing gmes or winning them? Im confused by your logic, my logic is there are 16 games, you have to win more. Whats so wrong about that.

This week would be a really good game to have, but its not a "must win" .... i usually save those for division and conference foes

how many did they plan on losing, and did they have more wins than the other team?

You're twisting my words. Never did I say they were "planning on losing" any of the games.

The very fact that they lost one or more regular-season games, and yet still won the Super Bowl, in itself proves that not every single one of the regular-season games is a "must-win." That fact is logically indisputable.

I see what you are getting at, but I dont think anyone expects to go 16-0. I expect most division game to be a toss up (maybe 3-3) and GB, Denver we would coniderable underdogs. If I assume 5 losses there, 1 more loss is about all afforded before it starts to get iffy and you need help. So losing games like this REQUIRES you to win some games you likely are not projected to win. That should happen if you are going to win a SB, but you can't lose to many inferior or evenly matched teams often.

What I would like to see the team do, is take care of teams that they should and consistently play solid and win games where the teams are close.

I am not a huge beliver in momentum in a vacuum, but if any team starts off 4-0 to 8-0, I think they begin to play with confidence and other teams begin to press.

All I want to see is a fast start for a change. This team gets dictated to far too often vs dictating to the other team until after the half.

Why is November some magic cutoff?

Anything before week 9 is just too premature? lol

So, do they play to lose or to win? im confused here, each game you play to win, you must win. LEt me put it to you another way, tell me the player that continues to suck and keeps pulling a paycheck, (ok there are a few) and hte fans love to see him on the field? The logic is the same, you play to win, not to lose, you play to be the best, no one wants subpar on their team.
