Can we Switch to a 3-4 Defense?

we all knew one day the Madden people would take over.

Sure, lets just flip a switch and go back in time to when the 3-4 was the future. Everyone does it and when everyone does it or can do it, it works out great.

I knew this time would be coming one day where we as fans would be calling for quinn to be gone
He is the coach that had a 28 point lead in the sb with less than 2 quarters to go and blew it. Also we had a huge lead last year against packers and blew that. He can’t stop the run.

It’s probably where we’re heading if they hold on to McCarthy which is almost certain. If they do decide to hire a new coach I’m guessing it will be Kellen Moore as the most likely target and there’s no telling where it can go!

I mean why not try something different, get possible better usage out of our players

We have mazi/hankins/hopefully another big body coming soon this off season to play the NT

Have Lawerence, Micah as our pass rushing OLB's (i'm not sure how much coverage you're going to want either doing maybe more so micah) law can drop back and cover the flats IF he'd be willing to even make the switch

Fehoko/Osa as our DE's add bigger DE's for the 3-4 (just an idea for right now)

Find new ILB's

Make Sam williams a LB as well, try to get him on the field, this would be his last season to show something substantial

What else can we do, please give your thoughts
I've never been a fan of the 3-4 HOWEVER,
We only have 1 special player in our front 7 right now and IMO he is meant to be an OLB in a 3-4 and is too small to hold up as a 4-3 DE. So I would make the move, if they get the right coach to run it.

I thought about this during the season as well but a look at our roster, like others have pointed out, shows that we are undersized even for a 4-3. You'd need a lot of personnel coming and going to get what you need. Don't think it's feasible without spending a couple drafts adding some beef. Also, as other's have said, we're in nickel and dime 90% of the time anyway so really, what benefit is there to it?

We'd have to get a stud nose guard, unfortunately, they don't grow on trees.
When they ran a 3-4 a few seasons ago the staff refused to address the NT position. They tried playing the undersized Ratliff there and it didn't quite work out. It's kinda like how right now the staff refuses to address the linebacker position.

we don't have Hankins, he signed a 1 year deal and he's free to sign on with any NFL team that shows interests.

As for 3-4, i'm with any scheme or DC that proves his scheme fits and is effective as we have the player personnel to best suit it.

We are too light to play a 4-3 D

Let’s switch to a 3-4 D guys

Brilliant idea. And this isn’t for the OP - I’ve seen multiple people make this same suggestion. It makes zero sense

Lololol - these players you have playing these 3-4 position have no prayer

Not to mention, how often are teams in base D these days? 20% - what are we even talking about here- basically nothing
Actually, Hankins and Mazi are nose tackle types, and nose tackles are not hard to find.
DLaw and Diggy and Gholston and Fehoko could all play 3-4 DE while you try to add. Except for JJWatt, 3-4 DEs play the run and dont give a great pass rush, just pressure. Parsons and Williams and Fowler or Armstrong if back can all play 3-4 OLB. Greg Ellis actually made a nice transition as the strong side OLB.

The real problem is ILB. But frankly, we have no LBs that can play in the 4-3 either and our 4-3 DTs stink. While the biggest problem is Quinn’s scheme and philosophy, we have fewer legitimate NFL defenders than most fans will believe. The defense needs rebuilding anyway, so why not switch now when the 3-4 is a much better fit for your two best defenders, Parsons and DLaw.

The 3-4 is the best defense for controlling the run game. That’s a fact by design. Many teams have run it successfully without a big time pass rushing OLB. With Parsons, this could be a run stopping defense that also helps him maximize his talent.
