As much as I hated the distraction when Wade was the general I so wish we were on Hard Knocks this year. I'm probably more pumped up than I've been in a long time for training camp. In another thread I posted some articles I had dug up and someone later someone added some video on Adrian Hamilton that got me all kinds of excited about his potential. I really like the direction we're heading. The more I watch and read about some of these other rookies and UDFA's the more excited I get. I also can't wait see Saalin Hakim and his 4.22 speed at WR and good hands battle for a roster spot after reading Broadus's take on him
You know that guy in training camp every year that you find yourself pulling for and hope he doesn't get cut because you just know we'll regret it later. That guy that just goes 100% all the time and you just know that with a year or two of coaching and conditioning you are looking at the next Myles Austin. Well for me the bottom of our roster is just full of those guys. Radway, Holmes, "Dirty" McSurdy, Phillip Tanner, Matt Johnson, Adrian Hamilton, Saalin Hakim, Lionel Smith, Ronald Leary, Danny McCray, Barry Church, it just goes on.
There are so many camp battles I just can't wait to watch this year. For example, with the emergence of Holmes last year, the return of last year's surprise UDFA Radway, the addition of Coale, and now UDFA Hakim added to Ogletree, and Harris I can't wait to watch this battle for 3 or 4 roster spots behind Austin and Bryant. I don't think Ogletree makes this roster. Who else doesn't?
How many linebackers do we keep? At the OLB position, where we've got Butler, Albright, Wilbur, Hamilton, and Whiteside battling for what probably amounts to 2 maybe 3 positions behind Ware and Spencer. On the inside we have Carter comming off his redshirt year, Lemon's in his second year, we added Conner in FA and drafted "Dirty" McSurdy all to compete for 2 or 3 spots playing next to Sean Lee. Wanna talk flexibility from what I've read Hamilton can play ILB too, I have no doubt that Lee, Conner, and Carter would be a legitimate LB corp in a 4-3. Maybe I'm way off here but I think Spencer could possibly play a little interior line in our nickel or dime in certain situations if one of these other outside rushers steps up.
On the interior line we've got Arkin and Nagy with an offseason of weights under their belts coming back, Kowalski gets another year under his belt, same with Costa, now we've added Livings and Bernadeau through free agency and Leary as a UDFA. And what about Holland, I thought he played ok last year? All I know is we have 7 or possibly 8 guys here fighting for 3 starting jobs and probably at most 6 roster spots.
On the Dline we've got Hatcher, Spears, Coleman, and now we've added Crawford to that mix fighting for for the end spots, and in 4 man fronts we have Ratliff, Hatcher, Lissemore, and now Crawford in the mix as interior rushers. At the nose we have Brent, Ratliff, and Lissemore mixing it up. Once you remove Ratliff from that list I'm not sure I see much seperation from top to bottom. Spears, Coleman, and Brent are run stoppers who clog thing up, Hatcher, Lissemore, and Crawford are quicker high motor guys more in the Ratliff vein. There should be some interesting camp battles here as well.
In the secondary Pool was brought in as the new FS but he will compete with what sounds like a draft day coup in Johnson and UDFA Wolfork. Don't be surprised if Scandrick doesn't take some reps there as well. I know Sensabaugh is safe but where do Church and McCray fit? And then there is the Carr, Jenkins, Scandrick, Claiborne corner competition. I don't think Jenkins goes quietly into the night. He had his best season when started the season ahead of him on the depth chart. I think he might be the kind of guy who needs a chip on his shoulder to perform at his best. And behind them fighting for 1 possibly 2 spots are 2nd year man Mario Butler, Teddy Williams and Lionel Smith who also looks like a keeper.
There is going to be some serious competition to make the 53 this year and I can't wait to watch it shake out. I have to admit during most preseason games I almost have to make myself watch the 4th quarter. I don't think that will be a problem this year.
Saalim Hakim, WR, Tarleton State 5-11 / 191 (4.29) – Studied this player when he was part of the Las Vegas team in the UFL 2011. Has timed speed at 4.29 and plays to every bit of that. Is the type of receiver that closes the cushion quickly on defensive backs. Explosive in and out of breaks. Will go anywhere to catch the ball. Is not afraid to take his route across the middle and catch the ball in traffic. Is a vertical player that can catch the ball at its highest point. Outstanding leaping ability. Catches the ball easily in his hands. Can snatch it on the move and create problems for the defense. Slippery with the ball in his hands. Took his route inside on a play and was able to adjust to the ball low and behind him. Does not allow his size to limit his ability to block. Is more than a willing blocker. Will not blow his man up but will stand in there and fight to try and free the ball carrier. Comes from a family of explosive players, his brother Az Hakim was an outstanding player for the St. Louis Rams and the "Greatest Show on Turf."
