I am not sure if this has been mentioned. If it has I have not seen it, but I rewatched the 49er game last night, and Canty played really well.

No he was not all over the QB as he probably will not be based on his position in the 3-4, but he really looked good to me. He was getting some good penetration in the run game, and made 2 or 3 plays behind the line of scrimmage.

I really liked what I was seeing from him, and I think he will just get better.

This was just a very solid draft pick, and luckily for us the gamble did not seem to be much of one.

Yes, finally a gamble rolls our way. I love the infusion of rookie talent that the organization has added. One or two more good solid drafts will have this team set-up for a decade.

He did look good. I'm anxious to see this "D" around midseason, Spears, Canty, and Ware will be much better and more comfortable to make plays. Right now, their eyes are still wide open.. Our defense is gonna be good, real good....

Our DL looks good. The LB corps needs someone to step up and support Dat and Ware, and the secondary desperately needs a free safety to settle things down. I'm more impressed with Newman every game he plays and Henry was a fine addition. I actually wish Henry was our FS, to tell the truth, but then we'd need another starting outside CB.

I agree.

We are witnessing growing pains right now for a young, inexperienced defense.

Future is so bright, I gotta wear shades. :shades:

Especially if you take into mind that Canty missed a good bit of training camp rehabbing. So he's probably not in the best physical shape he could be. Mentally, playing in a 3-4 scheme in college has helped him step in right away pretty much. Right now he's playing solid, which is all you could ask for. As the season goes on, and especially next season with a full training camp under his belt, we can expect more. He's gonna be a good one, I'm excited about him for sure!

Would like to see more knowledgeable discussion of Canty/Spears, I see them playing but they don't seem to making plays, understand that 3-4 does that, just wondering what the insiders are saying so far. Fajuka how would you rate him so far??

Our only real issues on D so far have been in nickle downs...
Where zimmy has choosen to play so "plain Jane"

4 man rush...The whole offense knows who to block...
Ware vs a top NFL OT...EVERY down...Geez, real innovative zimmy WUSS!

CHANGE things up or were going to get beat vs the Raiders...

Canty, Spears, Ware, Burnett & the rest of the front 7 need to do a much better job of doing stunts and forcing the offense into mistakes...

I think we also need to tweak our Nickle backers...Both Dat & Shanle are so slow and offer no big plays...Shanle was made a fool out of by old man Brunell...Dat is even slower...Whats McChunky soup going to do if he is healthy?

Spot on.. Can't disagree at all, except maybe about Dat and Shanle.

Heck yes, Champsheart... I remember seeing Canty very early in the game and thinking, "Wow, teams passed on him because they thought he might not play all year -- or his career could even be in jeopardy -- and here he is contributing heavily in weeks two and three." It's really a beautiful thing. And there's no telling how imposing he's going to be next year after a full year of lifting. He and Spears are going to be one heck of a pair of bookends for us for years...

Nickle is a problem but I think the bigger problem is that we do not have dynamic LB's that's required for a top notch 3-4 D. I know Ware and Burnett maybe the solution but as of now, NO.

3-4 depends heavily on it's LB's to both passrush and provide underneath coverage and it's not so easy to find good ones. I know we blame alot of 3rd and long conversions on our DB's but the underneath coverage LB's need to drop deep enough to prevent those throws. If our LB's and DL can generate pressure on a consistent basis, I think our DBs will be fine (in fact, more than fine).

Dat has been our best LB's for yrs now. He may not have the size but all he does is make plays. It's our other LB's that are the problem, not Dat.

Brian Carpenter, '06.
I'm with you, VA.

I just heard the other day that he was Rob Carpenter's son. I wonder how many here are old enough to remember him. ;)

Whoops, I meant Bobby. Did I get the wrong guy?:

Wasn't Rob Carpenter a hardass fullback who played for the Gints?

Ohio State lists a 6-4, 255-lb. linebacker as "Bobby?" Same guy, though.

Wow, I forgot about that... I was thinking of him with the Oilers... But yeah, I guess he played for Parcells in NY, too.

So I guess Parcells kind of "knows the player" already, like with Keith O'Neill. :)

You know, Hawk gets all the pub, but Carpenter is the playmaker on that defense.

i'm not going to see a Canty thread and not post, so... i did notice him in on several plays behind the line, and you can see the enthusiasm he has as well as the ability. he was slowed by injuries and is just one of many players (all the rookies and then some) that will only continue to improve as they gain experience and conditioning improves. spears, canty, berryo, burnett, ferguson, etc all should play better with each passing week.
this will be a scary defense next year, and darn tough down the stretch this season as well. if we can stay in contention thru Week 12, and stay relatively healthy, we should do well in the last part of the year...

Carpenter would be a wonderful addition to the 'Boys next year. You're right VA, he is a freakin' monster. With his size (6'3", 255), speed (4.56 40), and skillset (he is absolutely a monster stopping the run, rushing the passer, or dropping into coverage), he would be the perfect bookend to Ware. I see him becoming a much more athletic and faster version of Mike Vrabel. Better yet, he is a bigger version of Julian Peterson (when healthy).

I'd take either one of them or Ahmed Brooks of UVA right now.

Of course, I still want Mathias Kiwanuka more than anyone, but know we wouldn't take him. I just like imagining Kiwanuka and canty as bookends DEs. Talk about huge.

I think Canty and Spears have both looked very good. Those are pretty nice, young bookend DEs right there. In fact, the whole DL has looked good. I do think the nickle DL needs a little more work though.
