The difference between now and the, though, is that JJ used to operate right up against the cap FORCING him into restructures. Now he's playing with 24 million worth of "wiggle room". That's a damn nice chunk to start out with.

Dallas really got hurt by the lock-out and the cap penalty. Things were moving steadily along until the owners took the players to the woodshed. Even though the cap didn't get back to 2009 levels until 2013, Dallas really didn't have any major issues that I would call cap hell. They were up against the cap every year, but still managed to make some FA moves and extended quite a few of our own players. Some of the personnel decisions were off, but the cap strategy wasn't to blame.

Year Maximum team salary
2014 $133 million
2013 $123 million
2012 $120.6 million
2011 $120 million
2010 Uncapped
2009 $123 million
2008 $116 million
2007 $109 million
2006 $102 million
2005 $85.5 million

Which just so happens to be the one thing that used to bite JJ in the rear.

The error was in misevaluation of talent. You never err trying to add more talent at efficient prices. RW11, Hamlin, and Barber were massive miscalculations. He payed in 2000 for cutting Deoin finally but that got his a championship he would argue and it's hard to disagree. The real tragedy was Aikman and Irvin having career ending injuries right after Sanders moved on. That is what blew up the cap.

If Romo gets hurt then were screwed but that was the case anyway.

If Tom Brady, Russell Wilson, Colin Kaepernick, Ryan, Flacco, Manning brothers, Brees get hurt theyre respective teams are screwed too.

It's also hilarious to read reports on our cap situation and hearing how we are in cap hell.

Most years we can do anything we want. That includes last year when we let Ware walk without ever even approaching him about a pay cut.

It was a we are moving on move.

not sure I buy that

A rising cap really makes decisions to push money into future years a wise one.

And only further strengthens my personal belief that this team 'go for it' and load up for a run this year.

Agreed, considering a restructure was built into he deal to begin with. However, with the rising cap space ( in future years) and already sitting 24 million under the cap, unless we get a shot at a High impact DE, I'm not sure I would move off the needle at all right now.

I think if we want a shot, we've got a shot.

And it's a shot I think we need to take.

If we don't, it's that much closer to the window closing for Romo and JW. This is the reason it's blowing my mind that we aren't all in with the guys we already have. We can do what we need to do with our own guys, sign a couple more, and still be under.

If we tag Dez, let Murray and Ro walk, the progress we made, and the excitement we had this year will be a one year thing. The word will get out that JJ and The Boyz do things differently now, and not only will those guys be gone; but guys in the future will think about signing . And this includes when it's time to re-up with all of our big guys up front. The NFL is a bug fraternity, and all these guys talk. This isn't a road we need to travel on. Tony and JW have two good years left if we are lucky, let's get it done. now!!!

When done withing the parameters of what you think the CAP will be.
Not spend it all today and forget tomorrow.

JJ would know, as most owners should, what the future CAP figures are going to be at least 3 years out.

I know that there have been times when we had lesser teams and weren't afraid to spend big money, I see no reason why we should be afraid to spend now.

When Romo retires, this team is likely taking a step backwards. Rare is the team that has an Aaron Rodgers waiting after Favre moves on. My thinking is to 'kick the door in' now and do everything you can to compete while you still have the key pieces.

People want to blame JJones for messing up the cap but in reality the League really hurt the Boys more than bad management with the lockout. Deals to MBIII, RWill, Austin and Ratliff didn't help at all, but the cap went backwards from 2009 until finally getting back to 123m in 2013.

I don't think Dallas is really doing anything too differently, they just are making better personnel decisions. And don't ever worry about guys not wanting to play in Dallas. That ain't never gonna happen, especially if they keep winning. Just keep drafting well, resign the right guys and let the aging expensive vets go too early vs too late.

Well don't forget about the penalties that Mara and the other owners imposed on the Cowboys and Commanders when they tried to offload bad contracts on the uncapped year.

Whether it was fair or not is a different thread topic but the Cowboys tried to rebalance the books but the other 29 owners felt they were doing something wrong.

For the right player, I agree, stash. I'm not a proponent of spending money for the sake of spending money, though.

No, neither am I. But I think we need a difference maker at defensive end and I'd be willing to spend for that.

I don't really agree. There have been many instances over past few years that Dallas wanted to go after FA player and couldn't because of their cap situation.
