Not quite.

The $19.6M in 2017 represents all the bonus money proration in the contract from 2017 ($10.7M), 2018 ($5.7M) and 2019 ($3.2).

So if Tony Romo is gone next season (which I don't expect), and the team eats all the bonus money at once, he would count $19.6M against the cap and then come off the books in 2018.

If the money gets divided (a team can designate a player to count over to years or any move that happens after May), $10.7M would count in 2017 and $8.9M in 2018 (the regular $5.7M plus the $3.2M that was set for 2019).

This is a link to Romo's contract, it shows how the money is scheduled to count and what will happen if he gets terminated.
Thanks for the breakdown Fin !!!

Romo's ego is going to try to cash a check that his body can no longer cash and the Jones's are blindly loyal to him enough to let him do it. He is a major injury waiting to happen and if he is paralyzed by this carelessness he may end up forcing ownership of the team away from the Jones family.

The thing with Aikman we could all see that he was through during the season. I even remember some fans booing him. I could never do that. He was a shell of what he was. Tony can still play if he can stay healthy. That's about the only difference. But this is 2 straight seasons that his injuries are hurting the Cowboys.

Yeah, how could a Cowboys fan boo Aikman !!! He won 3 Super Bowl titles with Dallas !!! No other QB did that, Aikman did a lot for the Cowboys !!! :star::starspin::star:

Gotta disagree with ya

Yea it was a hard hit. QBs took hits like that back then. Aikman took a lot worse. That shouldn't have ended his career. He was already struggling for most of that season. Well I guess compared to nowadays it could be seen as brutal.

I think it would be great if the Cowboys and Romo can get together, tear up this current deal, and come to terms on a new, let's say two year contract based on games played-incentives.

Impossible, I know, but as excited as I am about Dak Prescott I really am not ready for the Romo era to end.

If he plays beyond 2017 they will have to.....he is due a manageable 14m next year but it rises to 20m a year after that

I just looked at it over on youtube. It wasn't brutal. It was just a hit that if he was a lot younger could have walked away from. I seen him take a lot worse than that.
Arrington was at full speed and hit Aikman unimpeded. It was way worse than the hit on Romo.

I agree. Aikman was taking epidural shots for severe back pain before every game in that 2000 season. He was a physical train wreck. Romo's back injuries are of the broken bone variety and not the structural issues Aikman had. Everybody's different. We can't lump Aikman and Romo's back issues under the same category.

Hope he can recover and be part of our Super Bowl Championship this year !!!!! :starspin::star::star:
