I don't understand how this thread has more than one response, "LOL."
well some people are realists
ABQCOWBOY doesn't agree with us, Broaddus or Mickey. The back and concussions were always the reasons
he left when he did. Aikman was killed his 1st year in the league and those hits surely shortened his career. Aikman
was mostly a stationary target for DL and his lack of mobility really caused issues until the OL got better in the SB years.
Who is us?
Northtexan95 responded that his recollection was that Aikman said his back was the reason he retired.
nope. it was back. But Aikman didn't retire because of his back. He retired because of concussions. It's true that Troy had back issues but I don't think the situations are exactly the same.
I can just see Romo getting released here like Kurt Warner did with the Rams and then go to some other team that is a QB away and just light it up.
All of you wanting Romo to hang it up make me sick on this Monday morning!
Dallas has an Offensive Cadillac and I want Tony Romo driving this thing all the way to the title!
nope. it was back.
from wiki:
During a late December 2013 radio interview, Aikman said the real reason he retired was due to persistent back issues he had in his final season. Aikman explained that he had back surgery in the offseason following Super Bowl XXVII with no complications but by the time he reached his final season he was constantly getting treatment for back pain. While the hit by Arrington ended his 2000 season, he claims it was the back pain and not that concussion that ended his career.[12]

As base salaries are obviously not paid to retired or released players, the important parts here are the prorated amounts on each of the years remaining.
Romo has $19.6 million remaining of unamortized signing bonus. If he outright retires, that would accelerate onto the 2017 ledger, meaning the Cowboys would save $5.1 million of space on next year’s cap.
That would also clear up $25.2 million of 2018 space that is currently earmarked for Romo, and $23.7 million of similar 2019 space.
Financially speaking, that flexibility would be a boon for the Cowboys.
There is also a possibility that due to his affinity for the club, Romo could allow the club to release him as what was formerly known as a June 1st cap casualty. If that were the case, then only the 2017 prorated bonus amount ($10.7 million) would hit the cap next year, giving Dallas the savings of Romo’s entire 2017 base salary, $14 million.

If that were the case, then the $8.9 million prorated amounts for 2018 and 2019 would then be on the 2018 salary cap as dead money.
That would mean the Cowboys would save $10.6 million on the 2018 cap, and still the same $23.7 million in 2019 space.
I think we need Adam ?
People focus on the dead money instead of focusing on the massive savingsI think they were reading the conversation between me and @bkight13 from Saturday...

If Romo retires or gets cut next year DAL saves 5.1m against the cap and Romo doesn't get paid one dollar........all the guaranteed money owed to Romo has been paid....This thread made my understanding of the situation worse i think.
If Romo wasn't on the team next season/year how much money in player salary towards the team cap for next season would the Cowboys free up, and how much would be owed to Romo?
Ok, and if Romo is gone next season does moneys he was already paid also count against next seasons cap? How much? I got confused when i read "19.6m sounds like a lot but is nothing compared to 49.9m and dead money only represents savings from previous years".If Romo retires or gets cut next year DAL saves 5.1m against the cap and Romo doesn't get paid one dollar........all the guaranteed money owed to Romo has been paid....
Romo's contract has a been one of the best contracts the team has ever given a star...it matches DWare and TSmith......Romo has been averaging 17m a year for his extension and is ONLY getting 8.5m this year to help the team.... Star QBs get paid, deal with it.......the huge base salaries in 2018-19 have always been place holders for the cap and were made large to make the deal and his agent look bigger......we are past the point of Romo's contract being an anchor......if he retires the cap savings will be huge.......forget the dead money, that is just accounting and is SOP

Yes, money saved against the cap over the length of his contract that has not been accounted will be charged to next years cap.......that amount is 19.6m.....his cap charge if he plays is 24.7m that is where the 5.1m in savings come from if he retires......24.7m-19.6m = 5.1mOk, and if Romo is gone next season does moneys he was already paid also count against next seasons cap?
