Sounds Maddenish but according to Schefter you can give out crazy signing bonuses this year.

Im assuming this means Miles can get most of his money this year while keeping his future base salary low.

You could also use this to re-do/reward Rat. Lock him up and give him most of the money up front.

Wonder if we can move RW11's money around. Keeping his number low in future years would take some pressure off him.

If it's ture, it would be a great way for Jerry to get a jump on most of the rest of the league as it would pay off down the line.

That doesn't sounds like a good plan if they eventually get a new CBA in place. If it is at all similar to the old CBA then signing bonuses would again be pro-rated over the life of the contract. It seems that making the first year's base salary as high as possible would be the way to go to circumvent future salary caps if a new CBA is put in place.

this would work if it were a roster bonus(never been pro rated), signing bonus could as stated still be pro rated possibly in future

great way to have some of the most important pieces of your team already paid off and for them to have almost zero motivation.

I'm not positive, but I don't think that is the problem. :D

That would be helpful. Did he touch on the furture salary cap loop hole I asked about yesterday?

Can we rid ourselves of future pro-rated SB liabilities by re-doing existing deals and accelerating SB all into 2010.

EX: Ware probably has a huge SB number to be prorated from 2009-2014.
Maybe 3 mil a year to be added to salaries that may look like this:
5,6,7,8 and 9 mil from 2010-2014.
If we tear up the current deal while simultaneously resigning him to a deal that just pays the yearly salaries he was due, have we effectively remove 3 mil a year in furture cap $ liabilities?

my thought too.

last year i earned $20mil
this year i'll only earn $2mil

i'd never pre-pay an athelete like that. we see many drop off after big paydays as it is.

Do you think you'd see that drop off from Romo, Ware, Witten? Haw about Ratliff and Miles?

You only do it for the high character guys you KNOW are motivated beyond the $.

Sure it is. If we had traded a 3rd rd pk for the guy and he was only making 3 mil a year..........you wouldn't have 1/10th the *****ing and moaning going on.

Something else to consider.........

If we can eat up any future SB liability into 2010 by redoing his deal......why not?

Lets say his salary # going forward is 5 mil a year. but his cap # going forward is more like 9 mil.

If we remove that element, it's easier to make a decision on him based on talent alone.

If he's the 3rd best receiver on the team, we could perhaps still afford to pay him 5 mil.
If after the 2010 we decide that he's not worth the scheduled 6 mil in base salary for 2011, we can cut him with a zero cap hit in 2011.

why give them the $ and find out? then, what if injury in the 1st game. you just sunk $20mil into a player for a years work who will now produce less than roy williams.

too easy to backfire. why put yourself in such a potentially bad situation?

Now I'm not saying go overboardand pay someone 20 mil of 25 he'll cost over five years in 2010.

You play the percentages. What are the chances a key player like Ware or Romo suffers a career ending injury in any given season? I know we had a scare with Ware, but how often does that actually happen? 1% chance, maybe less.

Now if you take some key players who you know have at least 4 prime years left and pay them say half of what you would pay them over 4 years in 2010, not much risk.

Romo, Ware, F. Jones, Austin, Ratliff, Spencer, Jenkins, Sensabaugh, Witten and James.

I'd call this an A list. Fairly low risk of under performance after a large pay day.

Cap wise it's smart to move money around like that, but fiscally it's not a smart move. You have the risk of a career ending injury that you ended up pre-paying a player 60-70% of his contract value before the injury. Fiscally you just blew a lot of money on that guy, cap wise you might be better off but you just lost a ton of money.

You're right, but like I said, you play the odds and do it with players you trust.

Lets say you give these guys new deals......

................................2010....2011....2012...2013...2014...2015
Romo......6yrs 72mil......36.0.....6.0......7.0.....7.0......8.0.....9.0
Ware......6yrs 60mil......30.0.....4.0......5.0.....6.0......7.0.....8.0
Austin.....6yrs 54mil......27.0.....4.0......5.0.....5.0......6.0.....7.0
Ratliff......6yrs 48mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Spencer...6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Jenkins....6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Jones......6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Sens.......6yrs 30mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0

Just think what it would mean to the Cowboys to have these young core guys locked up for 6 years with these low potential cap numbers for 2011-2015.

This just in - players who are a few years into their deals tend to look at their annual salaries and compare them to others at their position. If it doesn't stack up, you get complaining, renegotiation demands, retirement threats, and trade posturing. Players see that signing bonus as money already banked and no longer relevant. Throw in the financial irresponsibility that many of these guys show - a 3 million dollar salary soon after you've spent like a man making 20 million a year isn't going to cut it. You can't make it rain like you did a few years ago.
