You're right, but like I said, you play the odds and do it with players you trust.

Lets say you give these guys new deals......

................................2010....2011....2012...2013...2014...2015
Romo......6yrs 72mil......36.0.....6.0......7.0.....7.0......8.0.....9.0
Ware......6yrs 60mil......30.0.....4.0......5.0.....6.0......7.0.....8.0
Austin.....6yrs 54mil......27.0.....4.0......5.0.....5.0......6.0.....7.0
Ratliff......6yrs 48mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Spencer...6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Jenkins....6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Jones......6yrs 42mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0
Sens.......6yrs 30mil.....24.0.....3.0......4.0.....5.0......5.0.....6.0

Just think what it would mean to the Cowboys to have these young core guys locked up for 6 years with these low potential cap numbers for 2011-2015.

The CBA won't let you structure contracts that way. The second-year amounts are less than half of the first-year amounts, so the difference would be prorated over the length of the contract.

Thanks Adam. This was an extreme example that I was sure wouldn't fly for one reason or another, but since your here, let me ask you something....

Could we take a deal like the one we just signed Ware to and rip it up?
With the intention of taking the hit for all remaining pro-rated SB in 2010.

Basically sign him to a new deal that would pay him the yearly salaries he was already going to make from 2010-2014.

Now the only cap hit would only be for those future annual salaries. Do you see where I'm going with this?

This just in - players who are a few years into their deals tend to look at their annual salaries and compare them to others at their position. If it doesn't stack up, you get complaining, renegotiation demands, retirement threats, and trade posturing. Players see that signing bonus as money already banked and no longer relevant. Throw in the financial irresponsibility that many of these guys show - a 3 million dollar salary soon after you've spent like a man making 20 million a year isn't going to cut it. You can't make it rain like you did a few years ago.

That's seldom the case. Players and agents that take that route will do that with any deal.
A 7yr 56mil dollar deal is just that. A deal that averages 8 mil a yr. Getting a lot up front is a good thing and should make the player except a little less overall if anything.
Of course like I said, it only makes sense with the right players. Cornerstone, high character players.

But like Adam said, it's not really allowed to the extreme I was suggesting.

Nope. If we released Ware, there would be no acceleration into 2010. Before June 2, all of the prorations would remain in each season. Starting June 2, all future prorations would accelerate into 2011.

My guess is the rules will become retroactive or at least proactive as soon as a new agreement is in place.
