Cap question for rookies

When does the team need to show the $4-5MM in cap space that is allocated for rookies?

In other words, could the team use every bit of cap space they have and then designate, say Crawford, for a June 1 cut and use the $7.5MM saved after July 1 to be used for rookies?

They do not count against the cap until they officially sign, usually in the Summer, so your Crawford hypothetical would work..... the only time they would count right away is if the team had less than 51 players under contract and even then a min. 465k tender would suffice

The team only needs about 1-3m for the entire draft class when you apply the Rule of 51 in the off season........ this is different than the rookie cap of 5-9m that each team gets to sign their class....the rookie cap is a cap within the cap and cannot be exceeded or push the team over the team's cap

Last year the rookies contracts total around 9m but only took up around 5m in cap space due to the 51 rule.

Nah he is become Brandon Carr. Carr was decent but overpaid just as Crawford is. No one would whinge about him if he was making $5m AAV.

Hayden flat out could not play as evidenced by him being out of the league.

Nah. Crawford isn't decent. Brandon Carr is way better than decent.

Tyrone Crawford is an enormous albatross.

Exactly but that was drafting 4th and not 28th........DAL won't need much more than 1.75m for their draft class this year

BTW today was the day Carr's contract voided for 2017 leaving the team with 2.7m in Dead Money and Carr an UFA

I don't think you know what the world albatross means.

Because Crawfords contract isn't anywhere near it. Including the 7.25mm he's slated to make this year he'll have used 3.7% of our cap over the last 3 years. Cutting him outright next year would then actually save us 2mm in cap space.

Jay Ratliff was an albatross. Tyrone Crawford was one of our best lineman last year and someone who you wish made 2mm more less this year.

Bravo

His critics like to use his future cap hits to compare to his past performance.. 2016 was the first year of his extension.....let him player another year before final judgement

But for his 4.6m cap hit last year he was a bargain....... top 15 in hurries in the whole league

Name 5 SDE better than Crawford.

Carr struggles covering ins, outs, and comebacks without giving up the deep ball. He is physical and consistent but is an average starting corner.
I hated Carr at his 10m+ cap hit 3 years ago but as a cheap vet FA he could be a good signing

Yes, they could that; however, they don't need to worry about it. They can easily create cap space in 2017 if needed.

There are other cap hits that come into play when the season starts that are not cap hits during the off-season. Only the top 51 contracts hit the cap in the off-season. Once the season starts 53 contracts count against the cap, as well as the practice squad and any players on IR/PUP.

And for the record, I am not suggesting dumping Crawford. Was just looking for a scenario from a cap perspective how it could work to our benefit.

I would expect our cap number for the rookie pool to be substantially less than it was last year since we are drafting much lower this year.

Out right cutting him would cost us 500,000 Against the cap which isn't to bad. In 2018 we would save about 10 million

While still taking a huge cap hit of 10.3m and throwing away the 16.8 they paid him last year

At least 8m of that 16.8m last year was prepaying for 2017-20
