Cap question on TO - trade vs. release

Since Owens was released, his salary stays on the books. Had we traded him, would not that money come off the books?

If so - can the Cowboys trade a player and agree to pay part of the salary? Or trade cash?

Thanks for the info...

It would stay on our books no matter what. Not sure about the second part of your question however.

Side note: I was playing Headcoach 09 and it has a graphic that says John Gruden was traded to the Bucs for 2 yrs worth of 1st and 2nd round picks, PLUS 8 million in cash. How the hell did that work?

You have to show respect for big name guys like TO who CHOSE to sign with you as a free agent. You let those guys out of their deals and allow them to shop themselves. TO came out ahead here moneywise, pocketing about 1 mill more than he would have otherwise. Other players see that and take note that Jerry does not screw guys around.

And the answer is that we'd have had the same cap hit trade or release.

I assume the only thing on the salary cap is his signing bonus then? He didn't have a guaranteed contract did he? Surely he is not pocketing his new contract AND his Cowboys salary....

No, but he took home 13 mill bonus last year - so we ended up paying him an enormous salary for 2008

Exactly.

He received a $13 million dollar signing bounus on his new contract last year + his base salary for 2008 (which I am assuming is $6-$8 million).

So the net affect basically is that we paid TO around $20 million dollars cash for the 2008 season.

We paid Owens $13,736,720 for last season. His signing bonus was $12.9 million, his base salary was $830,000, and his workout bonus was $6,720.

so this would lead to the question why the cowboys didnt trade him? no team would want to take on that contract when they know that he would most likely would be released and signed for much less.

That's not correct. If the reports are true and Owens signed for $6.5 million, then Owens got a raise. We would have paid him $5.77 million this season, so the Bills could have saved $780,000 by trading us ANYTHING.

While we argue, that man is laughing all the way to the bank. Sort of like Jimmy Johnson did.

I'm sure its here somewhere buried in the 20 million other threads about Owens. But what are the cap implications of dead money beyond this season for Owens?

Thank God for that. :)

I was beginning to worry about our cap situation in 2010 IF somehow an agreement was put into place... But now with Owens gone and Roy off the books that helps out a great deal.

Next year is uncapped (at the moment), so no dead money will accelerate into 2010 at all this season. It all accelerates into this season's cap, even after June 1.

So why is next year going to be uncapped?

Because right now there is no CBA at this point beyond this season. 1 of 2 things is likely to happen:

1) they get a new deal, and a new cap etc falls into place

2) they dont get a deal and the owners lockout the players

If #2 happens than there is a #3 also - the fans get screwed.

I'm betting Goodell gets this figured out. The NFL is king right now and a lockout is the quickest way kill that.

The CBA doesn't end until after the draft in 2011.

The final season of the CBA (2010) is uncapped, with all sorts of new rules and everything in place.

So does that mean that all 32 teams dead money drops off the books in the uncapped year? Or if a CBA is agreed on before then would that change?
