The Cowboys are currently 8.5M under the cap.

They could get to 19.972M under with restructures to the following contracts:
Carr
Witten
Free
Orton

They will get another 5.5M on June 1st with Austin as a designated June 1st cut.

Due to the rule of 51, the draft picks will increase the cap by about 2M. They are usually signed after June 1st.

If they didn't sign any free agents and restructured all of the above contracts, they would be 25.472M under the cap in June before they sign the draft picks.

They're not going to restructure anyone. Nor should they.

The plan should be to sign some quality bargain free agents, draft well, and get in a positive cap position by 2016.

I'm not all opposed to the release of Free-standing who do we replace him with? Parnell or a draft choice?
Same with Orton-im sure a draft pick can replace him
Witten can and should retire after this season IMO

Got no problem with Carr other than we overpaid.... It is what it is

What is the deal with Free contract. I thought it was gutted last year when he accepted a reduction. When I look at it....its still way too high.

My thought is no more restructures for this season and save the 2015 cap for Dez and T. Smith.

The problem with Free is that I believe that his base salary becomes guaranteed if he is on the roster after March. Ideally, they would come to came a let Parnell, Weems and possibly a draft pick compete to replace Free. That would allow them to then cut Free; however, if his contract is indeed guaranteed after March, then they would have to make that decision now.

The original contract had base salaries of 7M in 2013 and 8M in 2014. The new contract has base salaries of 3.5M in both years.

This "wood" guy doesn't seem to have a clue about values of players. An average starting OL not on their rookie deal is going to be 3-4m a year.

If they didn't sign anyone they'd likely have one of the worst defenses of all time.

It's an informational post, not a projection of what they should do. I just wanted to show how much flexibility they have available.

I know (and totally appreciate it). The words written out just begged of my unsolicited opinion for some reason. :)

STOP RESTRUCTURING!!!! We've messed up in the past by just pushin huge chunks of money to the future... and because of it we had to cut the great 94... (it was the right decision) lets just suck it up and chew on these stupid big contracts now... Lets FINALLY plan for the future...

Shamefully will admit I didn't catch that until more recently; noticed your responses in correlation to the OP and was like = oops. Thanks for the knowledge/info!
