brief backstory: dumb person hits my car, right side door smashed in, about a 3 inch gap on top of door exposing inside of my car, I tape it up pretty well, it rains all weekend, some ******* cuts the tape, car gets wet on the inside, car taken to get fixed, car fixed, and now in my possession.

Now, what do I do to restore the "smell" inside my car left by the damn rain getting in, and what do I do to prevent mold and all that other good stuff?

The smell issue and any water damage resulting from the accident should have been fixed at the same time. Who paid for the repairs?

If you had a garage, I assume you don't since it got wet, you could try to pull the carpet up and let it air dry.

Yeah that was a bit of an issue for me, man. Basically I'm having to pay for all of this (well, a $500 deductible and the charges for the rental) and then be reimbursed by the "hitter's" insurance soon

I told my insurance, their insurance, and the car repair place about the car getting wet... but since it occured "after the accident", it wouldn't be covered

By the way, it took me calling the "hitter's" insurance multiple times and speaking directly to the "hitter's" adjuster a few times before getting the ball spinning on this. Insurance companies are the devil. Lesson learned.

P.S. "hitter" is another word for a female dog.

yeah, the car repair shop put it through some 180 F machine to dry it out as best they could

maybe it's just a matter of time then (damn rain)

It wouldn't have happened if she hadn't hit you. Your door having that gap was her fault. I'm sure you tried but I would have been livid.

Oh yeah, definitely. I said all I had to say multiple times to all parties involved so...

everyone do yourself a favor and avoid being hit by people with "Santa Fe Insurance Group" coverage.

I would call them back and tell them you have a police report where she hit your car, the door was damaged and due to them not getting an adjuster to look at your car and approving it to be repaired it was left outside and rain got in. They have two choices correct the damage or deal with your attorney. and I would contact an attorney, and oh btw you're starting to feel sick from being in the car and may incur medical bills if it's not repaired quickly...

BTW my insurance would have had the car fixed then went after their insurance to get the cost back...

Lots and lots of Febreeze.

I love that stuff. They got some good smellin scents out now too.

X

Let it air-dry.

Take all the stuff out of your car and leave the windows down on good days. The more the better.

Best I got

Seriously consider small claims court. Tell the "hitters" insurance of your plan. If they don't care, get three estimates and hire a lawyer. Be sure to sue the "hitters" insurance company to cover the expense of your lawyer.

If that doesn't work, find out where the "hitter" lives, go over to their house very quietly, break their car window, put a water hose from their house into the broken window, turn water on, run like heck.

Good luck.

This is not intended as legal advice, but I think this suggestion is terrible, though I can't tell if the first paragraph was in jest like the second.

Go with Febreeze and open windows for a while.

Pull the carpet back. It is likely still wet/damp under there.

Liberally spread baking soda between the carpet and the pad. and the pad and the body. If you can, also aim a high powered fun between the carpet and pad...

Use an enzyme cleaner as mentioned above... I've had GREAT luck with a product called "Out" and it can be purchased in the pet section at Walmart for about $7 a bottle. It hasn't dissappointed yet. Out makes a few products. Make sure you by the enzyme version. It is in a semi-clear plastic bottle with black writing and a black sprayer.. The stuff is also amazing on pet stains...

Lots of Taco Bell, then the release of methane gas. That will restore the smell. ;)

Pull the carpet as others have stated, If you have wet vac use that to remove any wetness. Then place dryer sheets through out the car and leave them for a while. Smell will be gone.
