Carrie Underwood: Tony Romo Still Calls; I Don't Always Pick Up

Although former American Idol sensation Carrie Underwood has become one of the country music's biggest stars, fame has its downside – especially when it comes to dating, she says.

"You never really know why somebody wants to be around you, or if they do genuinely like you," Underwood, 25, tells Allure magazine in the September issue. "I wish everyone had a label on their forehead so you could automatically tell their intentions. Sometimes you just wish that no one wanted anything from you."

The star, who earlier this year was inducted into Nashville's Grand Ole Opry, recalls a time soon after her success on Idol when a guy who'd ignored her in college – clearly enamored by her newfound success – called saying that "he wanted to explain."

Fame hasn't helped create lasting relationships for her either. Earlier this year, Underwood split from Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford via text-messages. "We didn't have a fight. No one cheated," she clarifies. "It plain didn't work."

As for Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, who now is dating Jessica Simpson, Underwood says she still hears from him sometimes – but doesn't always pick up the phone. "We were both small town people doing very big things, and we relied on each other, dealing with fame," says the singer who claims the relationship wasn't serious. And now? "I don't know. The phone will ring and it'll be him, and I'll maybe not answer."

Some of her reservations about opening up to people seem to stem from an old flame who cheated on her. "I don't want to name names, even though he probably deserves it, but he fooled around," she tells the magazine. "Oh, yeah, and lied! It was one of those things that everyone knew but me. He was a good liar. Nobody would come out and tell me. And he seemed perfect in every way."

Added the singer: "I'm sure we've all run into these people, whether they're friends, boyfriends or girlfriends."

I went to look at new TV monitors today at Best Buy, in talking to the 25 year old (or so) sales girl one thing lead to another and we got to talking about the Cowboys. She said I tell my boyfriend I am going to marry Tony Romo, He is the Man.

There are a lot of girls out there who would snatch up the phone in a heartbeat if Tony called. However I'm sure he is just like Carrie, when they find a "Friend" who wants nothing from them they hang onto them through thick and thin, no matter what.

Tony is a big boy and capable of dealing with his own life. I really don’t care who he dates

Carrie has been around for a long time, several girls have come and gone but he keeps his friends close. I have no doubt he can take care of himself. What is it Witten said "Tony is just livin', livin', livin'.

One thing is for sure. Carrie never used him for the publicity. She went out of her way to keep that part private. Jessica goes out of her way to make her relationship with Tony public.

I guess Romo really must love the twit. Carrie is so much the better person in just about every possible way. He really traded down badly.

You would think Carrie was the better person, but after those comments I dont see how Tony could still consider her a friend. For a person who says she likes to keep things private, that wasn't the best approach to make.

Agreed downgrade. The new model is rebounding from a failed marriage. The other one distrust men though.

She has good reason to distrust anyone outside of the friends she knows she can count on. famous people learn that one real quick.

What a snob...It's nice enough of Romo to still regard her as a friend but she wants to tell everyone she might ignore him. What an attitude! No wonder all the men including Romo ran away from her after just a few months.

I just don't think it's a big deal. She's a busy girl. She probably doesn't always have time to talk not just to Tony but others. She probably wants everyone to know they're friends but are not as close as they were. I'd guess it's her poorly articulated way of saying "I'm not after Jessica's man." She has to get annoyed with being dragged into their tabloid drama over and over again.

Actually that screams sour grapes...

Hell, when my ex calls me, I don't always pick up either.

Like when they attended the CMA awards? Or when they were caught kissing at the club?

Underwood has the better good girl image, so folks like her more. Unfortunately for those same folks, Romo likes Jess more. Me, personally, I don't particularly care who/what he's doing.

Oh and watch out folks, but it's creeping up on a year. Horror of horrors, but this could be, ya know, a REAL relationship. Who'd a thunk it?

Woodygirl you have a point, Tony seems to be really into Jessica. If you ask me they look in love it's already been 9 months getting close to that year mark. Tony have not backed down from Jessica and we are in football season, that's a good sign. The one thing I'm glad about is that Jessica has learned not to be seen at the games, per last week. As far as Underwood this makes her look like a child. Apparently she has not gotten over Tony and it shows. This story broke last week and Jessica and Tony was out looking happy Sunday I'm sure they have discussed this. Carrie gave this radio interview around the time of Allure interview, so I'm a little confused as to which story Underwood is telling have truth to it.

Agreed. Jessica is probably just a wilder chick than Carrie or maybe Carrie wants a strong commitment before she gives THAT.

I think she is just relaying her hurt and disappointment. Anything I read above didnt seem blatant. It seems that she wants to pick up EVERYTIME but right now its for not.

Agreed on both.

What gets me is how some talk about Jessica Simpson like they know all about her. What you read in teen magazines or national inquirer is not who many of these people really are.

You could replace Jessica Simpson's name with Carrie Underwood and it would still apply. Nobody knows how they are in their private lives.

Assuming Jess is a freak and Carrie isn't doesn't make either theory true or false. What goes on behind closed doors should stay that way.

That nice really. Nostalgic I guess.

But this is the year 2008. Things are different.

On a sidenote: someone mentioned 9 months as if it was a long time. That goes to show you how things have changed. Nowadays when I hear someone say "they were married for a long time, almost 10 years"... makes me laugh.
