"Recently, my colleague on the front page here at Blogging The Boys, Tom Ryleand I were discussing who we expected to be the surprise cut out of this year's training camp and I suggested Bruce Carter. Just a few months removed from being considered, at least by many Dallas Cowboys fans, as the best thing since sliced bread, or at least Sean Lee, Carter has suddenly become a weak link in the linebacking corps for the team. His struggles have been well documented since the team moved to the 4-3 defense that was supposed to be tailor made for him. Now he could find himself slated for a rendezvous with the Turk.

Head Coach Jason Garrett has stated that Dallas will put its best three on the field, and right now that appears to be a combination of Kyle Wilber at the SAM, Rolando McClain at MILE, andJustin Durant at WILL. This leaves Carter, who plays the WILL slot, as the odd man out. It is conceivable that Carter could back up both his own position as well as the middle linebacker, but the team could also choose to use rookie Anthony Hichens as the primary backup for both slots. If they choose to go that route, it is possible that the team might part ways with Carter and bring in a veteran journeyman the way they did recently with Ernie Sims. Sims was the player who started twice for Carter last year.

I don't know about cutting him, but does this make him a trade candidate maybe? Any teams out there with some "under the radar/embarrassment of riches" pass rushers?

i don't see cutting him since you still have very little depth. as for trading him if i could get something that helps now or a decent pick i would consider it. but one thing i think is very obvious is that he won't get another contract here

The question of whether they should cut Carter or not largely depends, in my mind, on how is he going to react/handle being a backup LB? Is he going to embrace it and do his best to get better and maximize the few opportunities he gets OR he is going to get down, mope, and continue his general downward spiral.

If he is going to mope and continue a downward spiral because he is no longer a starter then it's probably best to deal or cut him.

JAGs are always expendable. Three year rule applies and it starting to look like it wont happen for him in Dallas.

People say the dumbest things on internet articles. What's the point in cutting him? It's not a big cap savings. Do they really need to assure that there's a spot for Cam Lawrence?

As to your question, if Carter can't make it as a starter on "this" roster, he's highly doubtful to have any trade value. It would have to be a trade for a DE that a team is getting ready to cut and they think that Carter might do better in their scheme. He might have had a little trade value before when it appeared that he was going to be the starting WLB. Now that is been made public that he is probably going to lose that spot, you would be doubtful to get a 7th for him. Who's playing ILB for Rob Ryan? Maybe they would trade us some Gumbo for him.

We are in desperate need in all positions on the defense. JAGs are more than welcomed for our D. Carter will not go for this reason.

I don't think he is expendable at this stage given the injuries and lack of depth this team has had to contend with. As for starting or backing up it is in the hands of the players to go out and compete and if Carter best is not good enough then he will likely go into a backup role. His future is another story

But you have Kyle Wilber starting ahead of him and they just moved him to full time RDE?

Right now, I would not be very comfortable with the backups if Carter were traded, especially with Holloman hurt. I find more value in keeping a fourth guy who can step in and at least play decently.

If they can find that in a veteran journeyman, then maybe it's worth considering if Dallas were to get a good offer. But otherwise I don't see it.

Anyway, I think it's a bit premature at the moment since we don't know what's going to happen with McClain or if Carter won't be one of the top three linebackers when it all shakes out.

To my knowledge, Wilber is starting at SLB and moving to DE on third downs.

I think Carter getting reps at Sam will open some eyes on the staff. If he still can't contribute then, I think its still a bad move to cut him. He can still contribute on Special Teams and in a reserve capacity.

Cas:

That statement reeks of desperation. It reads essentially as "Even if he so bad he can't contribute on defense... well let's keep him anyway to play ST.".

These kinds of players are rarely well suited for ST. If is unable to contribute to the defense in any meaningful way, as hard as it is, it's time to cut bait.

Agreed, Sir...to this old linebacker, the Cowboys linebacker group are a somewhat soft positional group. Carter, actually until the arrival of Ronaldo McClain, was one of the slower but more aggressive players in that group.

Leave around more of McClain and with Sean Lee biting at his ankles, he might still come around. But for now, the depth needs him too much. And I would say now, yet another veteran presence that hits and runs. I would settle for Burnett.

Yes, you wouldn't keep him just for special teams, but he's highly likely to be better than the 5th or 6th LB on this roster.

He wasn't as bad last year as it's being reported. He didn't perform like we would all like, but it could be worse if you end up with a guy like Cam Lawrence starting due to an injury.

To my knowledge, Wilber is starting at SLB and moving to DE on third downs.

Reports refer to it as 3rd down, but they generally go to Nickel when the offense is in a 3 WR set. As the SLB, Wilber would be replaced with a slot CB.

No, he's not at this point. We have no depth. He's the first guy I'm looking to replace next year, though. I can't believe he's been beaten out of a starting role by Durant and Wilber. What a joke.

Wilber have been the starting SLB but moves to DE in the Nickel because they only use 2 LBs in the Nickel defense.
